North Rockland High School sophomore Katelyn Tuohy shattered the national high school record for the outdoor mile in 4:33.87 at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Her splits were 67.24, 69.09 (2:16.32 at 800m), 69.28 (3:25.60 at 1200m) and about 68 for the closing lap; she passed through 1500m in 4:15.07.

The previous outdoor mile record had stood since 1982, when Polly Plummer ran 4:35.24.

The NBNO meet record was 4:36.95, set by Sarah Bowman in 2005. The national indoor record is faster, as Mary Cain clocked 4:28.25 at the 2013 Millrose Games as a junior at Bronxville High School. Cain ran 4:24.11 as a senior in high school after turning pro.

Tuohy won the race by an astounding 16 seconds as Grace Connolly ran 4:49.34 for runner-up honors.

The national record is Tuohy's third this year; she set the outdoor two-mile record in 9:51.29 and the indoor 5K record in 15:37.12.
