Analysis:

Head coach Dave Smith’s Cowboys stumbled to a 29th place finish last November in Louisville, but their roster will have a whole new look in 2018 thanks to a slew of junior college transfers arriving in Stillwater.

Among those transfers is 8:55 steepler Ayrton Ledesma from Gillette, who won NJCAA titles both indoor and outdoor in 2018. Although he was just 20th at the NJCAA XC Championships last year, his track pedigree suggests he’ll immediately be at the top of the Cowboys’ roster. Joining him near the top should be redshirt freshman Isai Rodriguez, who had a stellar spring on the oval that culminated in a 13:53 5k PR at the NCAA West preliminaries.

Three men who have placed top 10 at the NJCAA XC Championships could fill the remaining spots on Oklahoma State’s top five. Felix Kosgei finished fifth at the highly-competitive meet in both 2016 and 2017, while fellow junior Jorge Perez was third in 2016. They, along with track stud Ashenafi Hatte, may not be household names, but their success at the junior college level shows that probably won’t be the case for long.
