Budapest has twice hosted the World Indoor Championships—in 1989 and 2004—but this event will mark the city’s first outdoor global championships.
As part of the local organizing committee’s bid, a brand-new stadium will be constructed for the competition with an expected capacity of 40,000. The stadium will be located on the south side of Budapest along the eastern edge of the Danube River.
IAAF president Sebastian Coe said this on Budapest hosting the World Championships in 2023: “It has been the scene of some of our greatest moments as a sport. We are excited about their plans for a new stadium that will become a great legacy for athletics.”
