Sir Walter Miler Preview: Chris O'Hare Battles U.S. Finalists

At the 2018 Sir Walter Miler, Lopez Lomong ran a 3:53.86 meet record, the then 33-year-old’s fastest mile in five years. Fast forward just under a year later and Lomong just swept the 10k and 5k at USAs, qualifying for his first World Championships since 2013.

I’m not saying that Sir Walter Miler kickstarted Lomong’s huge 2019 season, but I’m also not not saying that either. Anyway, the 2019 Sir Walter fields are filled with athletes hoping to follow a similar ascension heading into next year. After missing out on a spot on the World Championship team last week— Sir Walter features four athletes who made the 1500m final in Des Moines— a win in a competitive mile would be a nice way to bounce back.

Here’s who and what to watch on Friday night in Raleigh:

Men’s Mile (9:20 pm ET)

Who: Chris O’Hare, Eric Avila, Sam Prakel, Robert Domanic, James Randon

Analysis: Great Britain’s Chris O’Hare is the lone international athlete in this race and the two-time World Championship finalist is also the favorite with his 3:32 1500m best. O’Hare’s presence in Raleigh means this race has a great shot to break Lomong’s meet record— the 28-year-old O’Hare still needs the IAAF standard (3:53.10 mile), and he has a chance to hit it here after running 3:53.35 two weeks ago in London.

Beyond the Brit, Americans Eric Avila, Sam Prakel and Robert Domanic should figure prominently in Friday’s outcome. Avila and Prakel were fifth and sixth, respectively, in Sunday’s U.S. 1500m final, while Domanic (3:54.73 PB) was a last minute scratch in Des Moines. Prakel, third at Sir Walter in 2018, is the top returner from last year’s race and he owns the fastest PB in the field (3:50.94).

Women’s Mile (9:05 pm ET)

Who: Lauren Johnson, Cory McGee, Jessica Harris, Stephanie Garcia, Rebecca Mehra

Analysis: She ended up placing last in the final, but Lauren Johnson deserves a lot of the credit for five U.S. women running 4:03 in last Saturday’s U.S. 1500m. Johnson did not have the standard entering the final, so she decided to go for broke by jumping out to a two-second lead with 800m to go. Johnson hit the wall hard in the last lap, but her efforts made for a memorable race.

On Friday, the 32-year-old will seek some redemption in Raleigh, as will Cory McGee, who was disqualified from the 1500m prelims in Des Moines. The 27-year-old McGee has had a great season otherwise, and her 4:05.90 1500m PB run in June makes her the favorite for Friday. Johnson owns the 4:25.04 meet record from 2016 that the entire field will be targeting.

Another name to watch is Rebecca Mehra, who qualified for her first U.S. final in the 800m last week. She was ultimately DQ’d in the final, but the 24-year-old ran her 2:02.85 PB in the first round at USAs.
