Analysis: 

The Vikings return all but one member of their 10th-place NCAA team from last season, with a mixture of experienced seniors and rising sophomores promising to keep them nationally competitive once more.

Augustana did graduate their top finisher from last fall, Sean Heaton, but they have a No. 1 replacement in senior Aaron Runge, who has finished top 75 at nationals each of the last two years. Fellow senior Nathan Schroeder could also be the Vikings top runner this year after improving substantially on the track this spring.

The growth of second-year harriers Matt Steiger (84th at ‘18 NCAA XC) and Bonheur Mvuyekure (107th) will be crucial for coach Tracy Hellman’s squad as they attempt to get back on the podium for the first time since 2014. The Vikings will also look for improvement from senior Jesus Urtusuastegui, a great track runner who has not been able to replicate his 46th-place nationals finish from 2016 in the two years since. A positive sign was his All-American finish in May’s NCAA steeple final.
