Analysis:
After finally reaching the mountain top last fall in winning their first-ever NCAA DII cross country title, the men of Grand Valley State will now be tasked with overcoming the losses of their top duo, Zach Panning (second in ‘18) and Enael Woldemichael (sixth).
Losing those two — Panning graduated, Woldemichael left the program — leaves a considerable void that no team could expect to fill in just one season. But with three top-60 finishers coming back for the Lakers, GVSU can still earn a podium finish in their title defense.
Sophomore Tanner Chada is the unquestioned No. 1 after placing 21st in Pittsburgh and then taking third in the NCAA outdoor 5K. If he continues to progress in 2019, Chada is on a top-10 trajectory. Ben Zaremba and Jacob Domagalski each qualified for outdoors as well and should finish higher than 45th and 59th, respectively.
Colin Herrmann has never run at the national meet, but he very well could be one of the best No. 4 runners in the country. Herrmann ran 29:44 in the spring and finished 14th in the 10K.
Because of the surprising departure of Woldemichael, a two-time top 10 NCAA XC finisher, GVSU is significantly more strapped than they could’ve anticipated a year ago. But if the Lakers can get some production out of someone like stud freshman Caleb Futter, the reigning champs won’t fall off too much from their incredible 2018 campaign.
