The Class Of 2016 | Noah Lyles (Episode 9)
Our final Class of 2016 athlete is none other than Noah Lyles, a 2019 World Champion at 200 meters and one of the all-time greatest athletes in high school history. Lyles was certainly one for legend in Virginia, securing his fair share of state marks and championship performances. But the 2016 T.C. Williams graduate made his biggest mark at the age of 18 at the U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing fourth overall with a new high school national record of 20.09 seconds. Lyles would go on to win the 100m and 4x100 at the World U20 Championships before ultimately deciding to turn pro alongside his brother Josephus with adidas. Since then, Lyles has continued to improve and he has become one of the United States' most marketable stars.

14-Year-Old Breaks Mile World Record
Sadie Engelhardt's eyes were set this season on breaking the 14-year-old age group world record in the mile, which was set by Mary Decker in 1973. The Californian lined up in the girls championship race and was the only eighth-grader in the field. Engelhardt hung on tight with the leaders and put in a major kick the last 400m. As she came down the home stretch she made an extra push to come across the finish line in second. Most importantly, the FAT clock stopped at 4:40.16 and that mark officially broke Decker's hand-timed 4:40.1 record from nearly five decades ago. Englehardt shaved four seconds from a week ago when she competed at the Music City Track Carnival in 4:44.40.

The Class Of 2016 | Michael Norman (Episode 5)
Up next in our series is 2016 Vista Murrieta (CA) graduate Michael Norman, a two-time Gatorade National Athlete of the Year, a World U20 champion at 200m and one of California's all-time greatest athletes who set a 200m state record in 20.14 (+1.6) -- at the U.S. Olympic Trials, where he finished fifth -- and ran the third-best 400m time of 45.19. And yet, Norman's true rise would take place while he was competing for the University of Southern California, where he won four NCAA Championships and set in 2018 a then-World Indoor Record of 44.52 seconds in the 400m -- which later was not ratified -- before going on to qualify the World Championships in 2019. He holds career best performances of 19.70 in the 200m and 43.45 in the 400m and currently stands as one of the United States' most promising athletes of his generation.

We turn next to North Carolina native Anna Cockrell, a multiple-time NCAA champion at the 400 meter hurdles who is among the United States' best performers at the distance nationally. A once-prolific athlete in high school at Providence Day School who is among a family of athletes, Cockrell won the 400mH at the Pan American Junior Championships as a junior in 2015 before going on to double that excellence a year later at the World U20 Championships in Poland. Over the last four years, Cockrell has not only been one of the University of Southern California's most consistent and successful hurdlers of recent memory, but she also helped carry the Trojans to an NCAA team title in 2021, winning both the 100mH and 400mH at the NCAA Championships.

Premature Celebration Disaster
With 400m to go in the 1600m at the OHSAA Division II State Track and Field Championship, there was a pack of five guys all vying for the title. McDermott Northwest High School's (OH) Landen Smith made a push to take the lead. At 200m to go, Smith had built a sizeable gap from the rest of the field. Even with 100m to go it looked like Smith would take home the gold. Then with 90 meters to go Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy's (OH) Drennan Akins turned on the afterburners and took it to the next level Smith, who thought he had won, started to celebrate a few steps before the line while Akins was barreling down the track behind him. Akins dipped like a sprinter at the line and would finish just a hair ahead of smith in 4:19.72. Smith would place second in 4:19.75.

The Class Of 2016 | Drew Hunter (Episode 7)
Next up is 2016 Loudoun Valley (VA) graduate Drew Hunter, arguably the first high school track and field megastar in the social media age. Before graduating high school, he broke indoor national records in the 1,500m (3:41.93) and mile (3:57.81), surpassing a former legend in Alan Webb, who once was coached by Hunter's own parents, Joan and Marc. Drew also broke the 3K national record mark in 7:59.33. Perhaps more than big wins, though, Hunter formed a personal identity for gut-check performances and incredible kicks, none more noteworthy than his anchor leg in the DMR at the Penn Relays in 2016. Eventually, Hunter, the Gatorade National Runner of the Year in cross country in 2015, turned pro directly out of high school and signed with adidas. He continued to run well in 2017 and in 2018, dropping a career-best 3:35.90 in the 1,500m at an event in London and then followed by qualifying for the World Championships in 2019 in the 5K before an injury would take away that opportunity. Heading into the U.S. Olympic Trials, Hunter once again is experiencing pain, as an injury has kept him out of qualifying. But no doubt, Hunter will be back -- and his star will continue to rise.

In high school, Rainsberger won Nike Cross Nationals in 2015 and finished seventh in the 3K at the 2016 World U20 Championships in Poland. Rainsberger has since graduated from the University of Washington, but over her four-year term in Eugene and Seattle she has been prolific at a variety of distances in college, earning accolades in the 1,500m, 3K, DMR, 6K (XC) and the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
