Rarely can freshmen succeed on the national level but Ashley Spencer of Illinois was certainly able to do so to win the NCAA 400 meter title. The former 300 meter hurdle star in high school will skip the Olympic Trials in favor of the U.S. Junior Championships and hopefully a spot on the American squad for the World Junior Championships.
