Elise Cranny stuns everyone (including herself) after 4:40 mile at NBIN

No one saw it coming. At the New Balance Indoor National mile, Elise Cranny's plan was to simply hang with leaders for as long as possible. She stuck with the two-time defending champion, Hannah Meier, until about 50m to go. Cranny didn't fall off pace, but took the lead and broke the tape in 4:40.62 (#5 all-time). She had run some good workouts, but this one was a stunner. Earlier this indoor season, Cranny had posted a new personal best of 4:58, but that was run at altitude. Dropping down to sea level, Cranny shocked the crowd in NYC, posted an 18-second personal best, and ran straight into the record books.
