This is more than a fun headline, though that was definitely the excuse for writing this post. Washington head men's and women's track and cross country coach Greg Metcalf has hired the very not-related Eric Metcalf to be UW's sprints coach. The newer coach Metcalf is a rare thing in the track and field world: an actual semi-famous person who will be working full-time as a college assistant coach.

Eric Metcalf was an elite kick returner in the NFL for 13 years, making Pro Bowls for the Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers. But his new job was not handed to him--he worked as a volunteer assistant at Washington for four years before getting the full-time gig. He'll be coaching the Huskies sprinters, though he was a two-time NCAA champion in the long jump at Texas. His 8.44m (27-8.25) long jump from the summer of 1988 is still the Texas school record, better than anything Marquise Goodwin jumped as a Longhorn.

Metcalf returned 12 punts and kicks for touchdowns in a 12-year period; his 10 career punt return TDs rank second in NFL history. Here is a good video of Metcalf returning two punts for touchdowns in one game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1993; I'm almost certain that NBC's Tom Hammond is on the call.
