Jager fifth, Kemboi gets third World Championship Steelpechase title

Aug 15, 2013

Ezekiel Kemboi won his third World Championships gold in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase with a winning time of 8:06.01. American hopeful, Evan Jager, got 5th place in 8:08.67. According to track and field statistician Ken Nakamura, that time is the fastest 5th place finish at the World Champs in history. The pack, dominated by the four Kenyan competitors and led by Conseslus Kipruto, came through 1k at 2:45.94. Continuing with a consistent pace, the 2k split was 5:31.95 (2:46.01). With 600m to go there were six men left - the four Kenyans, Jager and Mekhissi-Benabbad of France. With 300m to go Jager began to fade as Kemboi, Kipruto and Mekhissi-Benabbad started an early kick for the line. Kemboi finished his last lap (more than 400m because the water pit is on the outside of the track) in 60.4. Jager closed in around 62. That was also Kemboi's sixth medal at the World Championships in his career.
