Joyciline Jepkosgei lowered her own world record when she won the Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Half Marathon in 1:04:51, breaking her mark by one second.
With the help of pacer Ezekiel Kemboi, Jepkosgei flew through the first 5K in 14:52, well under the scheduled pace. She continued the momentum through 10K in 30:09. With such a brisk early pace, she slowed down through the following five kilometers and covered the 15K split in 45:59. At that point in the race, it appeared that the record might not happen.
But Jepkosgei recovered and fought through the final stretch to beat her own record by one second. The performance marked her sixth world record this year.
"It was my first race in Valencia, I enjoyed a lot, the weather is nice, the circuit is perfect to run fast," Jepkosgei told the IAAF. "I hope to come back in March for the (IAAF) World Half Marathon Championships."
Jepkosgei initially broke the world record in April when she won the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon in 1:04:52. The Valencia performance followed a stellar win at the Birell Grand Prix in Prague, where she claimed the 10K road victory in a personal best of 29:43.
