AUSTIN -- Fresh legs did Savannah Sutherland of Michigan well as she upset Arkansas' Britton Wilson, running on 25 minutes rest, to win the NCAA 400m hurdles title at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Sutherland, a sophomore, won the race in a personal-best time of 54.45 seconds.

"That was just amazing," Sutherland said "Going in, I knew I had some really great athletes behind me, so I just had to get out and leave it all on the track. This is my last race of the season, I had to go for it."

Wilson, who was attempting to become the first athlete to ever win the 400m and 400m hurdles titles at the same NCAA Championships, was also beaten in the 400m, by Rashidat Adeleke of Texas.

Masai Russell of Kentucky finished second in 54.66 seconds, and Chastity Pickett of Campbell was third in 54.86 seconds.

Sutherland credited the presence of favorites like Wilson and Russell to helping her keep her composure.

"I think it honestly helped calm me down a little bit," she said "The focus was on them, and I really had nothing to lose. It really helped me get after it and give it all that I got."

Brooke Overholt of Vanderbilt, Shaniโ€™a Bellamy of LSU, Lashanna Graham of Clemson, Britton Wilson of Arkansas, Abbey Glynn of Colorado, and Sydni Townsend of Houston rounded out the top eight.

The first five runners in the race all ran new personal bests.

Wilson, last year's NCAA champion in the event, finished seventh in 55.92.
