The Harvard women’s track and field team made history on April 26 at the 2024 Penn Relays when they ran the College Women’s Distance Medley Championship of America race in a blazing time of 10:37.55

That time shattered the previous collegiate record held by Villanova, which was set 36 years ago in 1988, of 10:48.38. 

The Harvard time is not only a Penn Relays record but also a new national record.

The team of Sophia Gorriaran, Chloe Fair, Victoria Bossong and Maia Ramsden edged out a Providence team of Shannon Flockhart, Jillian Fenerty, Alex O'Neill and Kimberley May. In any other year, Providence would have won the race as they also broke the Villanova record as they ran 10:39.55. In fact, Flockhart set a record with a 3:15.11 time in the leadoff spot.

Virginia also came close to breaking the record, finishing third with a time of 10:48.55.

Harvard, which competed in the first Penn Relays 128 years ago, won the COA for the first time since 1936. 

The Villanova record in 1988 was set by Kathy Franey, Michelle Bennett, Celeste Halliday and Vicki Huber with a time of 10:48.38. 

The 2024 Penn Relays is the 128th edition of the event, which first was held in 1895. It now welcomes more than 15,000 athletes of all ages and skill levels (high school, college, Special Olympics, professional/elite and Masters).
