Jamaica High School Track And Field Shows Up At Penn Relays 2024

Jamaica has the biggest representation of all the international participants at the 2024 Penn Relays with 47 high schools competing this week.

The Penn Relays presented by Toyota has evolved to become one of the world’s most prestigious track and field meets, and its history spans nearly 130 years.

Along with elite athletes of all skill levels from across the United States among the more than 15,000 participants, the meet also attracts top talent from around the globe.

Jamaica, known for turning out countless track and field stars, has the biggest representation of all the international locations with 47 high schools represented this week at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

The 2024 Penn Relays also includes teams from the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago and Turks and Caicos.

One of the schools making noise at this year’s Penn Relays is Hydel, which provided one of the biggest highlights Friday by winning the High School Girls 4x400 Championship of America with a time of 3:34.78.

Hydel edged Maryland’s Bullis School, which finished second with a national record of 3:35.17. Bullis topped its own mark of 3:35.23, set earlier in 2024.

The 2024 Penn Relays is the 128th edition of the event, which first was held in 1895. It now welcomes more than 15,000 athletes of all ages and skill levels (high school, college, Special Olympics, professional/elite and Masters).

Teams from Jamaica have been dominant in the 4x400 relay, but Bullis nearly pulled off the upset Friday at Franklin Field.

  5. St. Elizabeth Tech (JAM) (Shanque Williams, Shavanecia Griffiths, Habiba Harris, Chennai Jarrett) - 3:45.06
