Qualifying Standards For The US Olympic Trials 2024
The 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field run from June 21-30. What are the qualifying standards to even get there?
The 2024 Summer Olympics are two months away, and the dream of going to Paris still is very much alive for countless athletes.
For the track and field stars in the United States, their fates will be determined at the 2024 United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, from June 21-30.
The results of this national championship determine who will be representing Team USA in Paris, as long as they’ve achieved the Olympic standard set by World Athletics, which is what makes them eligible to compete in the Olympics. But what does that mean?

- Qualifying Standards For The Olympics In Paris 2024
In track and field, there’s a qualifying process that spans more than a year, giving athletes time and many opportunities to achieve specific times/scores during meets even to become eligible for the premier events.
The international governing body for track and field, World Athletics, has set the standards for which they're aiming.
This is something that happens globally, from collegiate events to the World Championships and Olympics.
Having standards guarantees a high level of competition and balanced fields in each event and category. For Paris, half of the track and field participants will qualify through the entry standards, and half will qualify based on world rankings.
The athletics part of the 2024 Olympics will include 23 men’s events and 23 women’s events, plus two mixed events (4x400 relay and 35km team race walk).
As noted above, the United States uses a trials format to determine who will wear the red, white and blue on the biggest stage. To make sure the best of the best are there, there’s a second set of standards set by USA Track & Field that athletes must meet to be eligible to enter the U.S. Olympic Trials.
About US Trials Track And Field Qualifying Standards
First, athletes must be citizens of the United States and meet eligibility requirements. They also must be members of USATF. They qualify for the Trials via performances at USATF-sanctioned indoor and outdoor events during the qualification window.
The qualifying window for the 10,000 meters, combined events, race walks and relays opened Dec. 31, 2022 and closes June 30, 2024. Marathoners had from Nov. 1, 2022 until April 30, 2024 to qualify. Qualifying for all other events opened July 1, 2023 and will close June 9, 2024.
The qualifying standards for the U.S. Olympic Trials are slightly different than what’s required by World Athletics for the Olympics, but athletes ultimately must reach the World Athletics threshold to earn a spot overseas.
The 2024 Olympic Games will take place in Paris from July 26-Aug. 11. The athletics events are scheduled for Aug. 1-11.
The USATF qualifying standards for the U.S. Olympic Trials are listed below.
