The Pre Classic, the fifth event of the 2024 Wanda Diamond League season, will see a selection of the world’s best track and field athletes return to familiar territory — Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

The season kicked off at the end of April with a pair of stops in China — Xiamen and Shanghai/Suzhou — and then rolled through Qatar on May 10 and Morocco on May 19.

The 15-event Diamond League schedule this year will see the athletes cross the globe, with the season-ending championship event taking place in Brussels, Belgium, on Sept. 13-14. There will be a short break in the schedule for the 2024 Summer Olympics in early August.

The Diamond League Eugene 2024, officially known as the prestigious Prefontaine Classic, will include six men’s disciplines and eight women’s disciplines, as athletes continue collecting points toward the year’s final event in Belgium.

The invitation-only Diamond League brings together the most elite track & field athletes to showcase their skills, earn prize money, collect points toward the season-ending championship event and ultimately elevate the status of athletics across the globe.

Traditionally, Diamond League competition includes a slate of 16 disciplines, though not every meet features all of them.

Points accumulated during the first 14 events of the season determine the athletes who advance to the final event, where they compete for more prize money and Diamond League titles.

The disciplines featured in Eugene in 2024 will be:

Men

  • 100 Meters
  • 200 Meters
  • 110-Meter Hurdles
  • 400-Meter Hurdles
  • Shot Put
  • Bowerman Mile

Women

  • Discus
  • Pole Vault
  • Triple Jump
  • 100 Meters
  • 800 Meters
  • 1,500 Meters
  • 5,000 Meters
  • 3,000-Meter Steeplechase

Prefontaine Classic 2024: What To Know

The 2024 Prefontaine Classic, like all Diamond League events, will feature a variety of Olympic and world champions, while this meet also will have some additional implications — it will include the selection events for Athletics Kenya’s 10,000-meter Olympic teams.

Among the superstars expected to compete in Eugene are Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia, the No. 2-ranked women in the world in the 1,500 meters; Olympic silver medalist (1,500 meters in 2020) Laura Muir of Great Britain and Northern Ireland); multi-time world champion (World Athletics Championships in 2019, 2022, 2023) and Olympic silver medalist (110-meter hurdles in 2020) Grant Holloway of the United States; defending Pre Classic 110-meter hurdles champion Hansle Parchment of Jamaica and many more.

The prestigious Prefontaine Classic first was held in 1975, though its roots were planted two years earlier as the Hayward Restoration Meet to help raise funds for the restoration of the grandstands at Hayward Field.

It didn’t take long for the event to turn out memorable performances, so there was a demand to continue the meet even beyond the completion of the initial renovation project.

Over the years, the sport's best have graced the Pre Classic both as participants and behind the scenes to help the event continue to be successful.

Hayward Field, which was built in 1919, is no stranger to top-tier track and field events, including the Diamond League.

The venue is named after Bill Hayward, who ran the University of Oregon track and field program from 1904 to 1947. Though it originally was intended for Ducks football, many additions and renovations over the century have helped it become a premier destination.

In September 2023, the venue became the first facility outside Zurich or Brussels to host the two-day season-ending Wanda Diamond League Final where the year’s 32 overall champions were crowned.

Though the circuit’s 2024 stop isn’t the end-all event it was last year, it should be exciting in its own way as a preview of what’s ahead this summer.

First, Hayward Field will welcome America’s best track and field athletes back to Eugene, Oregon, from June 21-30 for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. The top performers there will get another crack at the world’s best during the 2024 Olympics in Paris (July 26-Aug. 11).
