Leo Neugebauer Breaks Decathlon Discus World Record, Paces For Second Title
Leo Neugebauer Breaks Decathlon Discus World Record, Paces For Second Title
Leo Neugebauer set a world record in the discus and is poised to collect a second straight decathlon title at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
As if his national title-winning performance at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships wasn’t impressive enough, University of Texas decathlon star Leo Neugebauer has stolen the spotlight at the 2024 event in Eugene, Oregon.
The 23-year-old German native already was on record pace in his title defense this week, and he added to the highlight reel Thursday afternoon at Hayward Field with the farthest decathlon discus throw in history (collegiate and world record) – a toss of 57.70 meters (189 feet, 4 inches). It came on his first attempt of the day.
Bryan Clay set American legend and Olympic champion the previous mark of 55.87m in 2005 – though a quick Google search might suggest that German Armin Lemme reached 56.18 nearly three decades prior.

Regardless of what you read or believe or who previously held the No. 1 spot, Neugebauer now tops the list, but that’s only part of the historic performance he’s putting on two months ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
In fact, his discus mark was the third record he’s broken across the two days of decathlon competition – and it probably won’t be the last.
On Day 1, Neugebauer broke his own collegiate men’s outdoor decathlon shot put record with a throw of 17.46m, topping the 17.26m he had in March. He also had personal-best efforts in the long jump (7.86m) and high jump (2.07m).
The successful day in the historic venue helped Neugebauer head into the overnight break with a collegiate-record first-day score of 4,685.

Leo Neugebauer Is Breaking World Records
As the 10 events of the decathlon wind down in Eugene, it’s likely Neugebauer is going to break his own record for total points and possibly become the first collegiate athlete to surpass the 9,000 barrier.
On the way to the decathlon national title in 2023, Neugebauer posted a record score (collegiate and German national) of 8,836 points, which also was the eighth-best score in the history of the event. He was the runner-up in 2022 with 8,362 points, losing to a then meet-record 8,457.
Now, two weeks shy of his 24th birthday, Neugebauer sits at 8,309 points after nine events, meaning he’ll need to register 528 points in the 1,500-meter race that’ll wrap up the competition and his collegiate career.
His lead of 851 points over Mississippi State sophomore Peyton Bair has Neugebauer poised for a second consecutive decathlon national title, but how high can he raise the bar?
The performance- and formula-based point system used in the decathlon may be dizzying for some, but simply enough, through the first nine events, he only has one sub-700 performance (687 in javelin) and a high of 1,032 (discus).
Would another outdoor national championship be the highlight of the year for the Longhorns star? That’s a tough one.
Neugebauer also is the German record holder in the heptathlon, an event he won at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships on the way to being named USTFCCCA Indoor National Field Athlete of the Year for 2024.
Oh, and he’s headed to Paris to represent Germany at the 2024 Olympic Games. The track and field portion of this year’s Olympics will take place Aug. 1-11.
