It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the halfway point of the track and field segment of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The track and field competition began Aug. 1 and will end Aug. 11. 

No matter how you look at it though, the fans are big winners, too. There have been amazing moments, upsets, surprises and emotions galore, but there’s also so much anticipation for the rest of the events.

Among the events concluding Tuesday are the women’s hammer throw, men’s long jump, men’s 1,500 and the women’s 200-meter event.

The women’s 200 was shaken up Sunday morning when one of the top contenders, Sherika Jackson of Jamaica, withdrew from the opening round. She’s the two-time defending world champion in the event. She also backed out of the 100m this week in Paris.  

Following the repechage round of the women’s 200m Monday, the 24-athlete field for the semifinals was finalized, and the list was narrowed again later in the day. 

The top two finishers in each of the three semifinal heats, plus the next two highest times overall, advanced to the final.

Team USA’s Gabby Thomas set the pace in the semifinals, turning in the top time of 21.86. She was followed by St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred, winner of the 100-meter race this week in Paris (21.98). 

The eight remaining athletes will battle for the gold Tuesday at 3:40 p.m. Eastern.

In the men’s 1,500, two names immediately come to mind as the top contenders – Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway and Josh Kerr of Great Britain. The former is the defending champion at the Olympics. The latter is the reigning world champion. 

The women’s 1,500 action gets underway with Round 1 on Tuesday at 4:05 a.m. EDT.
