When Are The Mile Finals At NCAA Indoors 2025: What To Know
The women's mile at the '25 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships will include the NCAA record holder. Here's what to know.

It may seem hard to believe, but the person who recently ran the fastest indoor mile in NCAA history won’t be competing for a national title in that event at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.
North Carolina senior Ethan Strand is that individual, and while he won’t be the man to beat in the mile this week in Virginia, he’ll be focused on the 3,000-meter event, where he’s the No. 1 qualifier. So, more on that elsewhere.
Instead, let’s focus on the fact that neither 2024 champion in the mile will be back in the field for 2025, so we’re guaranteed to see a new name at the top of the standings this year.
Oh, and the runner who broke the women’s mile record less than a month ago – Oregon junior Silan Ayyildiz — will be in Virginia looking to add a national title to her record-breaking season.
The 2025 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place March 14-15 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Scroll down for all the details about who will be competing in 2025, when the preliminaries and finals will take place and who won in 2024.

As of March 6, nine defending champions are expected to be back at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships to put their titles on the line. The mile will not be one of those races.
But when the women’s mile does get underway Friday afternoon, all eyes should be on Ayyildiz, whose record-setting time of 4:23.46 at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston on Feb. 15 moved her to the top of the list of 16 qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Ayyildiz’s performance bested the previous mark of 4:24.26 set by North Carolina State’s Katelyn Tuohy in January 2023.
Fellow Oregon senior Wilma Nielsen, who previously held the Oregon mile record and has run sub-4:26 miles twice this season, also will be in the field this weekend in Virginia Beach.
The fastest short-track indoor mile in history for women was a 4:13.31 effort by Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba in 2016.
Did You Know: The men's NCAA record for the indoor mile now is 3:48.32. Strand beat the previous mark by more than two seconds to become the first collegiate runner with a sub-3:50 mile. The record previously belonged to Oregon’s Cooper Teare. He ran a 3:50.39 mile in 2021.
Strand’s time landed him third on the all-time list (at the time), with the world record being 3:47.01 by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in 2019. However, since Strand’s performance, Kejelcha’s mark has been beaten three times — Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3:45.14) on Feb. 13 and a pair of Americans, Yared Nuguse (3:46.63) and Hobbs Kessler (3:46.90), on Feb. 8.
Those performances drop Strand to seventh when sorted by athlete and 10th when sorted by all performances, as Nuguse owns four of the top 8 times in history.
