Grand Slam Miami: Top Athletes to Watch, Challengers Are Coming to Win

Grand Slam Miami promises to be an exciting event—thanks in large part to the challengers. They made a strong impression in Kingston, where they played the role of the "away team" and brought unexpected energy and results. Now, some of them are returning to test their skills again in Miami. Here are a few standout groups to watch:

Women’s Short Hurdles

This group has plenty of depth and intrigue. Racer, Masai Russell is beginning to find her rhythm this outdoor season. Since Kingston, where conditions were windy and the season still early, she’s competed at both the Tom Jones Memorial and the Drake Relays, clocking times of 12.62 and 12.74 respectively.

Tia Jones, who currently holds the world lead, made waves in Kingston by winning the 100m hurdles and finishing sixth in the 100m dash, earning her second place overall and a $50,000 payday. She’ll be back in action in Miami, adding another layer of excitement.

Also joining the lineup is Keni Harrison—the former world record holder, current American record holder, 2020 Olympic silver medalist, and now a Grand Slam Challenger. Her presence alone ensures a thrilling race.

Men’s Short Hurdles

Dylan Beard made headlines in Kingston by winning the 110m hurdles and placing third in the 100m. Despite his strong performance, he came second overall in the short hurdle group, edged out by racer Sasha Zhoya, who took the top spot.

Beard, who joked about his plans to see LeBron James courtside, may get his chance—if he can make the necessary adjustments in Miami and claim the $100,000 prize. That dream playoff trip could become a reality if the Lakers advance past the Timberwolves.

Women’s Short Sprints

Jacious Sears is returning after a standout showing in Kingston, where she placed third overall. Her rookie season is shaping up to be something special, and she’s already proven she can hang with top-tier talent.

This time, she’ll be joined by Gabby Thomas, who will be testing her speed in the short sprint group. Known for her versatility, Thomas could shake things up and add even more firepower to an already stacked field.

With rising stars and proven veterans colliding, Grand Slam Miami is set to deliver another thrilling chapter in the series. Keep your eyes on these groups—anything can happen.
