Kenny Bednarek landed the perfect blow, securing his first ever U.S. National Championship at the 2025 USATF Championship.

On Friday night, Bednarek secured not only his first 100m national title but also his first U.S. title in an already decorated pro career.

Bednarek’s track career has always taken the path less traveled. He was a multiple-time high school state champion in Oklahoma but had to settle for Junior College due to academic issues in 2018. At Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, he quickly developed into a world-ranked 200m runner and signed a professional contract with Nike in 2019.

Since signing, he has competed on four straight U.S. teams, including two Olympic squads, earning silver in the 200m twice. The 100m has long been his secondary event, but training under Dennis Mitchell has sharpened his straightaway speed.

Last year, he qualified for his first World team in the 100m with a 9.87 and finished 7th in the 100m final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This year, Bednarek’s undefeated streak and a wind-aided 9.79 telegraphed his growing potential in the event.

He entered today with the fastest qualifying time at 9.95, the only man to dip under 10 seconds in the prelims. Bednarek said his goal was to keep the effort smooth in hopes of winning his first national title.

“From the gun, I just tried to make sure I was in the clear, and it felt really good,” Bednarek said after his 9.95 preliminary run. “It felt easy, and that’s all that matters.”

That cool, calm, and collected demeanor was on full display as he glided down the track to win the final in 9.79, which tied Maurice Greene and Noah Lyles as the sixth-fastest American in history.

At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, he’ll lead a stacked American sprint squad alongside Courtney Lindsey and T’Mars McCallum. Noah Lyles, who earned an automatic bye by winning the 2023 World Championships 100m, will also join the team.

Kenny “Kung Fu Kenny” Bednarek will look to carry this momentum into Tokyo, but first, his focus turns to the 200m semis on Sunday.
