Jonah Koech Stuns Field To Win U.S. 1500m Title at USATF Championships 2025
Jonah Koech and Nikki Hiltz win thrilling 1500m titles at the 2025 USATF Championships, securing spots on Team USA for the World Championships in Tokyo.

The 1500m finals at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships delivered both the expected and the unexpected.
Nikki Hiltz continued their reign of dominance, capturing an eighth consecutive U.S. title, while Jonah Koech stunned the field with a remarkable victory in the men’s 1500m—an event he only recently adopted.

Though Koech is no stranger to international competition, this marks his first time qualifying for a World Championship team in the 1500m.
Previously representing the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, he competed at the global level in the 800m.
Since transitioning to the Under Armour Mission Run Baltimore 800m team, Koech shifted his focus to the 1500m, making an immediate impact by clocking 3:31.43 at the Rome Diamond League in May.
In today’s final, Koech ran a tactical race, staying patient at the back of the pack as Yared Nuguse pushed an aggressive early pace. Then, with 200 meters to go, Koech unleashed a devastating kick, surging from sixth to first.
In the final 100 meters, he powered past defending Olympic champion Cole Hocker and three of the four fastest Americans in history. He crossed the line in 3:30.17—making him the seventh-fastest American of all time in the event and solidifying his place among the country's elite.

In the women's 1500m, Nikki Hiltz extended their consecutive U.S. Championship win streak to eight.
After sitting on a comfortable pace through the first three laps, Hiltz battled with Sinclaire Johnson to the line. In the final 50 meters they separated to win in 4:03.15 and grab their 8th U.S. title across the roads, indoor track, and outdoor track.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Hiltz didn't make the 1500m final. However, they bounced back in 2024 to place 7th in the Olympic final in Paris. There's no doubt Hiltz will aim to improve that placement at the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
