The 51st running of the BMW Berlin-Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, Sept. 21. In the festivities that will take place from Sept. 20-21st, there are 80,000 participants throughout the course of the two days in a number of divisions. 

On Sept. 21st, the race will begin at approximately 9:15 AM local time in Berlin. During that time, 40 of the world’s best marathon runners will compete in the men’s and women’s elite divisions. With 20 participants in each division there are a few names who stick out above the rest in the field. 

In the Men’s Elite Division, Sabastian Sawe, representing Kenya, will be the top runner in the field. Sawe won the Valencia marathon in 2024 and clocked a 2:02:05. Closet behind Sawe is Tanzanian runner Gabriel Geay who was the runner up in the Valencia marathon in 2022. Geay sits second on the qualifying list with a 2:03:00. 

In the Women’s Elite Division, Kenyan runner Rosemary Wanjiru is in the top of the field on the qualifying list. The runner up in the 2024 Tokyo marathon clocked a personal best of 2:16:14. Wanjiru is not the only runner to watch in the women’s division as Ethiopian runner Degitu Azimeraw is close behind qualifying with a 2:17:58.
