The 51st running of the BMW Berlin-Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, Sept. 21. In the festivities that will take place from Sept. 20-21st, there are 80,000 participants throughout the course of the two days in a number of divisions. 

In the Men’s Elite Division, Sabastian Sawe, representing Kenya, will be the top runner in the field. Sawe won the Valencia marathon in 2024 and clocked a 2:02:05. Closest behind Sawe is Tanzanian runner Gabriel Geay who was the runner up in the Valencia marathon in 2022. Geay sits second on the qualifying list with a 2:03:00. 

In the Women’s Elite Division, Kenyan runner Rosemary Wanjiru is in the top of the field on the qualifying list. The runner up in the 2024 Tokyo marathon clocked a personal best of 2:16:14. Wanjiru is not the only runner to watch in the women’s division as Ethiopian runner Degitu Azimeraw is close behind qualifying with a 2:17:58.

Sawe gets the win! His winning time is 2:02:15. No World Record, Course Record or Personal Best but a strong race in hot weather conditions. After wins in Valencia (2024) and London (2025), Sawe adds Berlin to his marathon resume. He stormed through the half marathon mark in 60:16, ahead of world record pace, but came up short Kelvin Kiptums’s 2:00:35 mark (Chicago 2023) — still crossing the line first in dominant fashion.

Sawe comes through the half marathon in 60:16, ahead of pace for Kelvin Kiptum's 2:00:35 World Record. Sawe has run negative splits at his previous two marathons (2024 Valencia, 2025 London).
