Hellen Obiri Sets Course Record, Benson Kipruto Wins at 2025 NYC Marathon
Hellen Obiri Sets Course Record, Benson Kipruto Wins at 2025 NYC Marathon
Hellen Obiri broke the course record to win the 2025 New York City Marathon in 2:19, while Benson Kipruto won in a photo finish over Alexander Mutiso.

It took a course record to prevail in the battle of the New York City Marathon champions, but '23 winner Hellen Obiri was up for the challenge, clocking 2:19:51 to break the 21-year-old record by nearly three minutes.
She held on to a 5:05 pace in Central Park to distance runner-up Sharon Lokedi, the '21 NYC champion, who ran 2:20:07. The win was well-earned, as Lokedi outkicked Obiri at the Boston Marathon this spring in her own course record. Third-placer Sheila Chepkirui, last year's champion, also ran under the old course record in 2:20:04.
That Margaret Okayo's pre-super shoes era record of 2:22:31 has lasted so long is a testament to the difficult and often tactical nature of racing in New York City.
American Fiona O'Keeffe held her own, running with the lead pack and still in contention through 30K. She rallied to finish fourth in 2:22:49, the fastest time ever recorded by an American on that course. New York marked just her second marathon since winning the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2024.
Fellow American Annie Frisbie placed fifth in 2:24:12, while U.S. record holder Emily Sisson was eighth in 2:25:05. Amanda Vestri had a successful debut with 2:25:40 to snag a top 10 finish. Olympic champion Sifan Hassan seemed to run out of gas, finishing sixth in 2:24:43 just eight weeks after winning the Sydney Marathon.
The men's race saw an incredible photo finish, as Benson Kipruto prevailed over Alexander Mutiso by three-hundredths of a second with both men recording identical times of 2:08:09. The duo separated themselves from the chase pack heading into Mile 24, leading to a thrilling head-to-head matchup in Central Park that saw Mutiso surge and fall just short of victory.
Kipruto has now raced himself into legendary marathon territory, as he is the first man to capture victory at four World Marathon Majors: 2021 Boston Marathon, 2022 Chicago Marathon and the 2024 Tokyo Marathon in addition to today's win in New York.
Albert Korir, the 2021 New York City Marathon champion, held off marathon debutante Patrick Dever of Great Britain for third, 2:08:57 to 2:08:58.
Minnesota Distance Elite's Joel Reichow took top American honors with a sixth-place finish in 2:09:56, while fellow Americans Charles Hicks and Joe Klecker recorded solid debuts in the top 10, running 2:09:59 and 2:10:37 respectively.
Top American steeplechaser Hillary Bor, twice an Olympian on the track, fearlessly ran to the lead several times throughout the race and finished in 12th, 2:10:47 in his debut.
Two-time Olympic champion and former world record holder Eliud Kipchoge placed 17th in 2:14:36, in what he hinted what may be his final World Marathon Major.

The top three women broke the long-standing course record of 2:22:31, set by Margaret Okayo in 2003, as Lokedi runs 2:20:07 and Sheila Chepkirui holds on to clock 2:20:24 for third.
Fiona O'Keeffe was rewarded for her gutsy run with a fourth place finish in 2:22:49, cutting nearly two minutes off the previous best time recorded by an American in New York (2:24:42 by Molly Seidel in 2021). Annie Frisbie also finished under that standard, running 2:24:12 for fifth place.

10:48 A.M. ET - Sharon Lokedi vs. Hellen Obiri at 40K
Lokedi and Obiri drop Sheila Chepkirui at 40K, putting six seconds on the reigning champion with a 5:05 mile split. O'Keeffe still runs in fourth place, two minutes behind, while fellow American Annie Frisbie has overtaken Sifan Hassan for fifth place.
10:37 A.M. ET - Albert Korir narrows field down to eight
With some downhill segments into the 4:40s, 2021 NYC Marathon champion makes a bid to return to glory, taking charge with a 1:31 split through 30K as eight men total as still in contention.
Reports from the field that Molly Seidel, whose 2:24 is the fastest time recorded by an American on the NYC course, dropped somewhere between 16-17 miles.
10:33 A.M. ET - The big three puts almost a minute on the rest of the field
Sheila Chepkirui, Sharon Lokedi and Hellen Obiri split 1:56:48 through 35K, maintaining 5:18 pace, as Fiona O'Keeffe runs 38 seconds back and Sifan Hassan is more than a minute behind.
10:23 A.M. ET - Debutante Hillary Bor fearlessly leads from the front
Steeplechase specialist Hillary Bor is leading the elite field by several strides now, splitting 1:17:53 (5:01 pace) through 25K after the field ran 65 minutes for the half marathon.
10:15 A.M. ET - The big three lead but O'Keeffe and Hassan still in striking distance
Chepkirui splits 1:40:11 for 30K, maintaining a 5:18 mile pace, with Obiri and Lokedi in tow. O'Keeffe is a few strides back, running just ahead of Hassan. There's plenty of race to go but it does look like our champion will likely come from this top three.
10:10 A.M. ET - Fiona O'Keeffe is back
Okay, maybe we spoke too soon. O'Keeffe is back! It's a four-woman race, but Sifan Hassan is still well within striking distance. Hassan split 5:10 for that last mile and O'Keeffe ran 5:15 to catch back up to the pack who put in a 5:19 mile.
9:59 A.M. ET - Lead women's pack down to big three: Obiri, Chepkirui, Lokedi
Hellen Obiri splits 1:23:59 through 25K with a sub-5 pace downhill surge with Sheila Chepkirui and Sharon Lokedi in tow as we now have a race on our hands. American Fiona O'Keefe is now three seconds off the pack and still running ahead of Sifan Hassan, who is 17 seconds behind Obiri. Both women are still in contention, as track fans have learned to never count out Hassan.
According to bike pacer Becs Gentry, Hassan dropped off at the last aid station.
9:51 A.M. ET - Yudai Fukuda and Felix Bour lead elite men through 15K
Japan's Yudai Fukuda continues to stake his claim to the lead pack with Felix Bour of France running stride for stride at the front in matching Puma kits. Running icon Eliud Kipchoge is right up front as well in an eye-catching hole-punched Nike long-sleeve, which is likely cutting-edge technology for these chilly weather conditions. A full pack of 20+ men is still in contention.
9:46 A.M. ET - Sheila Chepkirui leads four-woman breakaway at halfway on course record pace
Here we go, now we have a race! Reigning NYC Marathon champion Sheila Chepkirui leads a breakaway pack through halfway in 1:11:01, with heavy hitters Sharon Lokedi and Hellen Obiri in tow, as well as American Fiona O'Keeffe who has not completed a marathon since winning the 2024 Olympic Trials.
Olympic champion Sifan Hassan is just a few paces down and still within striking distance.
The women are on pace to challenge the course record of 2:22:31, which was set by Margaret Okayo in 2003. The pre-super era record speaks to the typically tactical nature of the NYC Marathon, as that time is almost 10 minutes slower than Hassan's personal best.
9:35 A.M. ET - Yudai Fukuda makes a breakaway approaching 10K
Japan's Yudai Fukuda shoots his shot, taking off from the lead pack as the men approach the 10K mark. The official live tracking app lists Patrick Dever's 30:22 split as the lead, which speaks to the large mass of men who are currently tucked into this lead pack.
9:35 A.M. ET - Lead women's pack rolling deep through 15K
The lead women are still packed up, with reigning champion Sheila Chepkirui splitting 50:52 through 9.3miles/15K. All the major players are still here. 42-year-old Sara Hall, the American master's record holder in the marathon, has fallen off the lead pack and now running 12 seconds behind.
9:20 A.M. ET - Hillary Bor leads elite men through 15:11 5K in debut
Marathon debutante Hillary Bor found himself at the front of the pack early on, splitting 15:11 for the opening 5K with Albert Korir and Eliud Kipchoge close behind. The top pack is about 24 men deep.
9:08 A.M. ET - Elite women split 33:53 through 10K
Reigning NYC Marathon champion Sheila Chepkirui and Obiri lead a big pack of a dozen elite women through 10K, splitting 33:53 and settling into 5:20 pace. Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Molly Seidel backs off the pace, and is now running about 10+ seconds behind the lead pack in her first marathon in two years.
8:52 A.M. ET - Hellen Obiri leads elite women through 5K
From the gun, American Susanna Sullivan cut a familiar figure at the front of the women's elite field — a spot she enthusiastically embraced during the World Championships marathon in Tokyo just eight weeks ago. By the 5K mark, 2023 New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri led the field in 17:05 with Sullivan and the rest of the elite field in tow with a sub-5 minute pace surge that probably correlated with a downhill.
8:35 A.M. ET - Elite Women Start
The elite women will take off at 8:35 AM ET, followed by the Elite Men at 9:05 AM ET.
