The 2026 BU Opener could play host to some of the fastest races in world history with Josh Hoey playing a major role in that equation. Hoey will make an attempt at the 600m American Record on Saturday. Notably, the American Record is also the World Record.

The current American Indoor Record is the 1:13.77 that Donavan Brazier posted at the 2019 US Indoor Championships on February 24. Since then, several men have made American Records attempts, but no one has been able to top Brazier's mark.

Hoey, is coming off of a 2024-25 season that saw him set Indoor American Records in the 800m and 1000m. He ran his 1:43.24, record setting mark, at the 2025 Indoor US Championships. He went on to win Gold at the 2025 World Indoor Championships.

On the outdoor circuit, he finished well at several high profile meets, though he ran a very heavy schedule. In 2025, he has raced 22 races. In his most recent performance, he finished 13th at the New Balance 5th Avenue mile, running 3:51.9.

His 800m personal best of 1:42.01 gives him a fighting chance at the 600m World Record. Brazier recently ran his personal best of 1:42.16 at the US Outdoor Championships in August.

As things stand, only three men will run in the top section of the Men's Elite 600m at the BU Opener, Kerem Ayhan (Garden State Track Club) and Ryan Farrell (UNA) will join Hoey on track.

Jonah Hoey will pace that section.

The 600m will take place during the FloTrack Night In America Elite window. This 90-minute window will take place between 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. The top sections of the 800m, mile, 3,000m, 5,000m and men's 600m will race during this time slot.
