Josh Hoey Sets 800m World Record At New Balance Indoor Grand Prix

At the 2026 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, Josh Hoey claimed his second world record this winter, running 1:42.50 for the indoor 800m to take down Denmark's Wilson Kepketer's 1:42.67 which had stood since 1997.

This comes just less than two months from when Hoey set the 600m world record in 1:12.84 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener back in early December.

Coming into this race, Josh Hoey held the #2 All-Time performance for the event with the 1:43.24 that he clocked at the 2025 USA Indoor Championships last February.

Paced by his brother, Jaxson Hoey, once again, Jaxson took the reins early and out hot, splitting 50.02 for himself and Josh at 50.21 for the first 400-meters before Jaxson stepped off around 500-meters.

Hoey then kept his cadence to match the pace lights, splitting 1:16.19 at the 600m and then keeping them to his left until the finish where he broke the tape in 1:42.50, cementing himself into the history books once again by .17 seconds.

His world record was one of two set at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, as Hobbs Kessler also set the 2000m record earlier that day.
