The women’s mile at the 2026 BU Valentine Invitational delivered one of the greatest races in collegiate history.

Riley Chamberlain (BYU) ran 4:20.61 to finish second overall and break the collegiate record in a stunning late-race surge on Saturday night at Boston University.

With a blistering 32.20 final 200 meters, Chamberlain stormed past Wilma Nielsen on the last lap to secure the record in dramatic fashion.

Top Four Finishers – Women’s Mile (Heat 1)

  1. Elle St. Pierre (New Balance Boston) – 4:17.83

  2. Riley Chamberlain (BYU) – 4:20.61

  3. Wilma Nielsen (Oregon) – 4:21.04

  4. Jane Hedengren (BYU) – 4:22.22

Three Fastest Collegiate Miles Ever — In One Race

Chamberlain’s 4:20.61 now stands as the fastest mile ever run by a collegian. But she wasn’t alone in rewriting the record books.

Wilma Nielsen (Oregon) clocked 4:21.04, moving to NCAA No. 2 all-time, while Jane Hedengren (BYU) ran 4:22.22 for NCAA No. 3 all-time.

In a single race, the top three spots in collegiate history were reshaped.

The pace was honest from the start, but it was Chamberlain’s decisive close that separated her from history and everyone else. When Nielsen made her move, Chamberlain answered — and then found another gear in the final 200 meters.

Elle St. Pierre Returns With World Lead

Up front, Elle St. Pierre (New Balance Boston) ran away with the win in 4:17.83, the fastest time in the world this year.

The performance marked a statement return for St. Pierre, who missed the Millrose Games two weeks ago due to illness. She is back racing this season after taking last year off following the birth of her second child — and Saturday’s run sent a clear message that she’s once again among the world’s best.
