Unlike most athletes competing at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, Cooper Lutkenhaus will head back to high school next week after making history on the global stage.

In his first world championship final, Lutkenhaus embraced the pressure, confidently running his own race to take down a field of elite, experienced half-milers. The Justin-Northwest (Texas) junior clocked 1:44.24, holding off Eliott Crestan (BEL), who finished in 1:44.38, to become the youngest world indoor champion in history.
He surpasses Mohammed Aman (ETH), who previously held the distinction after winning the 800m title at the 2013 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow.
Following a breakout outdoor season as a high school sophomore, where he finished runner-up at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships and ran 1:42.27 to break the World U18 record and move to No. 2 all-time on the World U20 list, Lutkenhaus can now add world champion to his resume.
Lutkenhaus is now the second-fastest American in indoor history and has already positioned himself among the top 800m runners in the world.
