Today, Josh Kerr and Brooks Running have announced Project 222 - an attempt to break the mile world record and run the event in 222 seconds, a 3:42 mile.

Kerr will make the official attempt at the London Diamond League meeting on July 18, 2026.

US Audiences can watch the attempt LIVE on FloTrack.

The current world record of 3:43.13 was set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999 at the Rome Golden Gala.

"It is the hardest track and field world record right now in my opinion," Kerr told FloTrack. "And that's stood for the longest time, and there's a reason for that. It's not easy."

Josh Kerr Is Sixth All-Time In The Mile

Kerr currently ranks six on the All-Time List with his 3:45.34 from the 2024 Prefontaine Classic.

For Kerr, the attempt is more than a time-trial. On home soil and in the Emsley Carr Mile, there will  be a lot at stake.

“Project 222 is about embracing pressure,” said Kerr. “Calling your shot, putting yourself out there when everyone is watching, and seeing what’s possible when belief, preparation, and the right support come together.”

"The timing is starting to work out really well, and I want to be remembered as the best miler in the history of this era. To do that, you have to go after the big records. This is my bid."

The attempt will mark a collaboration between Kerr and longtime sponsor Brooks.

Brooks is developing a fully custom race-day gear kit, with each piece crafted to respond to his body and preferences. A custom spike is being refined through continuous testing around Kerr.

The spike is custom built to suit to Kerr's biomechanics.

According to Brooks, the brand is also exploring a custom speed suit through "three aerodynamic and temperature-regulating concepts with Josh as the sole tester."

The goal is to develop a speed suit specifically designed to optimize 222 seconds around the track.

The Brooks Run Research Lab is also working with Kerr and supporting physiological testing to improve sleep, hydration and recovery.

“This pursuit represents everything Brooks stands for — supporting bold ambition, building world-class performance gear, and showing up for athletes when the stakes are highest,” said Garrett Heath, Head of Sports Marketing at Brooks. “When an athlete like Josh dares to chase history and test the limits of what is possible, it inspires everyone pursuing excellence.”

Josh Kerr is the British 1500m record holder (3:27.79), holds the world best over the indoor two mile (8:00.67) and he most recently won the Indoor 3K World Championship.

In 2023, he won the 1500m at the World Outdoor Championship. He also has two Olympic medals in the event, a 2024 Silver and a 2021 Bronze.
