This week, it was announced that Cooper Lutkenhaus will run the first 1500m of his pro career at Sound Running's Track Fest on May 23, 2026.

The 17-year-old phenom, recently won the World Indoor Championship over 800m, so a step up to the 1500m could yield some interesting results.

The last time Lutkenhaus ran a race as long as the 1500m was May 27, 2025. Then, at the Lonestar Elite Invite, he ran a 4:06.33 mile - placing second to fellow high schooler Caden Leonard. Since then, Cooper has run as fast as 1:42.27 over 800m.

That 1:42.27 moved the phenom to number four on the US All-Time Lists, behind only Bryce Hoppel, Josh Hoey and Donavan Brazier.

So How Fast Can Cooper Lutkenhaus Run At Track Fest 2026?

If you go off of the raw World Athletics Calculator - a 1:42.27 performance would convert roughly to a 3:29.10 1500m. That would make him the third fastest man in US History behind Cole Hocker and Yared Nuguse. Ultimately, that is not a responsible way to predict performance because this method would assume that he is just as elite over the 1500m distance as he is over 800m.

Instead - I'd prefer to compare he to other fellow 800m runners. So let's look at Hoppel, Hoey and Brazier:

  • Hoppel - 3:39.78 (2025) - Age 27
  • Hoey - 3:29.75 (2025) - Age 25
  • Brazier - 3:35.85 (2020) - Age 25

All of the above runners are far more developed than Lutkenhaus, and they ran their personal bests over 1500m at least eight years than Cooper's current age. He has never broken four minutes over the full mile distance, but that 1:42 speed should translate relatively well. He should run in the low 3:40's or high 3:30's.
