Yihune Addisu waited until the final laps before turning the men’s 5000m into his race.
In a field loaded with sub-13-minute runners, the Ethiopian star unleashed the decisive move late and stormed to a world-leading 12:57.32 victory at the Xiamen Diamond League. The performance made Addisu the first man this outdoor season under 12:58 and capped another fast night of distance racing during the opening stretch of the Diamond League season.

Germany’s Mohamed Abdilaahi stayed with the leaders deep into the race and finished second in a season-best 12:57.90, while Ethiopia’s Biniam Mehary also broke 13 minutes in 12:58.51. The front pack remained tightly grouped through much of the race before Addisu’s closing speed finally created separation over the final kilometer.
Kenya’s Edwin Kurgat placed fourth in 13:01.47, while Khairi Bejiga and Birhanu Balew also pushed close to the 13-minute barrier in one of the deepest men’s distance races of the early outdoor season. Several athletes recorded season-best marks as the pace stayed aggressive from the opening laps.
The result continues Ethiopia’s dominant start to the 2026 outdoor distance season and adds another world-leading mark to the Diamond League meetings in China. After fast races in both Shanghai and Xiamen, the men’s distance events are already producing world-class times before the championship portion of the season fully begins.
