Alison dos Santos ran a world-leading 46.72 to defeat Karsten Warholm in the men’s 400m hurdles at the Xiamen Diamond League.

Alison dos Santos is making an early claim as the best long hurdler in the world again.

One week after defeating Karsten Warholm in the 300m hurdles in Shanghai, the Brazilian star returned to Warholm’s signature event and won the men’s 400m hurdles at the Xiamen Diamond League in a world-leading 46.72. Dos Santos controlled the second half of the race and surged away late to hand the Norwegian another defeat in one of track and field’s premier rivalries.

Warholm finished second in 46.82 after remaining within striking distance through the opening 250 meters, but dos Santos separated over the final hurdles and closed strongly down the homestretch. The performance gives the Brazilian consecutive victories over the world record holder to begin the Diamond League season and further confirms the form he showed in Shanghai.

The race also produced one of the deepest 400m hurdles fields of the outdoor season. Caleb Dean broke through for third in a season-best 47.75, while Trevor Bassitt and Abderrahman Samba both finished under 48 seconds. Six athletes crossed under 48.25 in a race that maintained a fast pace from the gun.

Dos Santos entered the season looking to rebuild momentum after several injury interruptions over recent years, but his performances in China have immediately placed him back at the center of the global title conversation. With consecutive world-leading performances and two victories over Warholm already secured, the Brazilian now leaves Xiamen as one of the strongest early contenders in the event.
