Three Weeks In: The Diamond League Reaches Rabat, Top Storylines to Watch

Two meets in and the 2026 Diamond League has its early shape. The circuit now heads to Rabat, Morrocco on Sunday, May 31 and the storylines are in full shape, yet again.

In the last weeks, Alison Dos Santos has won both meetings - the 300m hurdles in Shanghai, the 400m hurdles in Xiamen, Shericka Jackson swept the women's 200m races, running 22.07, and then 21.87. Then we have the women's 1500m, which has been fast even without Faith Kipyegon at either of them.

Rabat on May 31 changes the programme. The men's 400m hurdles is out. Dos Santos and Warholm won't share a track in Morocco. What Rabat brings instead: Emmanuel Wanyonyi making his first Diamond League start of 2026, Yaroslava Mahuchikh in her first competitive appearance of the year, a men's 200m that includes the last two Olympic champions in the event, alongside the man who finished second to both of them, and a javelin field loaded with former Olympic and world champions. Here is what to watch.

Tebogo, Bednarek, De Grasse in the 200m

Letsile Tebogo won the Paris 2024 Olympic 200m in 19.46 - the fifth fastest time in history and the African record. Kenny Bednarek was second in 19.62. Four years earlier in Tokyo, Andre De Grasse won gold in 19.62. Bednarek was second there too, in 19.68. He won silver at the 2022 World Championships as well and just to note, his personal best stands at 19.57 seconds. His career has been defined by racing exceptionally well, while someone else races slightly better.

While Tebogo is 22, De Grasse has been one of the most consistent 200m runners for a decade. This matchup is an interesting one, but the field also includes Bryan Levell, Courtney Lindsey, Sinesipho Dambile, Aaron Brown, and Cheickna Traore. The race in Rabat comes down to one question though: which of the three men will run fastest on the night.

Is David Rudisha's World Record in Jeopardy?

David Rudisha's 800m world record is 1:40.91, set at the London Olympics in 2012. Emmanuel Wanyonyi has been 0.20 seconds from it. His time of 1:41.11, the second-fastest in history, came at the 2024 Lausanne Diamond League. He went on to win the Paris Olympic gold that summer and the 2025 World Championship in Tokyo, where he ran a championship record.

The rest of the field: Gabriel Tual, the 2024 European champion, whose 1:41.61 is the second-fastest 800m ever run by a European. Donavan Brazier, the 2019 world champion. Max Burgin is in the mix, as are Slimane Moula and Yanis Meziane, among others.

The 800m is an event that rewards patience, positioning and the ability to accelerate when the space has already gone. Wanyonyi makes it look inevitable. Whether anyone in Rabat can complicate that is part of what May 31st will tell you.

El Guerrouj's Country and His Record

The 1500m world record is 3:26.00. Hicham El Guerrouj set it in Rome in 1998, and it has stood for 28 years.

Azeddine Habz ran 3:27.49 at the Paris Diamond League last June - sixth all-time and a French record, improving his personal best by more than a second and a half in one race. Yared Nuguse won Olympic bronze in Paris in 2024 in a personal best of 3:27.80. Festus Lagat (3:29.03), Lamecha Girma (3:29.51), Reynold Cheruiyot (3:29.91), and Isaac Nader (3:29.37) complete a field with extraordinary depth.

The race runs in Morocco. El Guerrouj is Moroccan. Anass Essayi, Fouad Messaoudi, and other Moroccan runners will race in front of a crowd that understands exactly what this event means to the country.

El Bakkali at Home?!

Soufiane El Bakkali won the Olympic steeplechase gold in Tokyo. He won it again in Paris. In between, he won the world title in 2022 and 2023. At the 2025 World Championships, he lost by 0.07 seconds to New Zealand's Geordie Beamish.

He races in Rabat, with the world record his stated target for 2026.

Beamish is also in the field. So are Abraham Kibiwot, Simon Koech, Samuel Firewu, and Frederik Ruppert.

No Nadeem. No Chopra.

Arshad Nadeem won the Paris 2024 Olympic javelin gold with an Olympic record of 92.97 meters. Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo champion, won silver. At the 2025 World Championships, both disappointed - Keshorn Walcott won the title in 88.16 meters. Anderson Peters was second, while Nadeem and Chopra failed to medal and neither are entered in Rabat.

What Rabat does have: Walcott, Peters, Thomas Röhler, Jakub Vadlejch and Julius Yego. Between them, these five hold six world or Olympic gold medals in the event.

2.10m Is The Mark To High Jump

Yaroslava Mahuchikh cleared 2.10 meters to win the Paris 2024 Olympic final and set a world record. She won the 2023 World Championship, but did not defend her title in 2025 - Nicola Olyslagers won that one, with Żodzik silver and Topić bronze - and she hasn't competed in 2026 until now.

The Rabat field: Yuliia Levchenko who won Xiamen last week at 1.99m. Żodzik and Topić. Eleanor Patterson the 2022 world champion, who holds a 2.02m personal best, as does Vashti Cunningham, will also be on the runway.

Laura Muir To Make 2026 Debut

Faith Kipyegon won the women's 1500m at the 2025 World Championships in a time of 3:52.15, but she has not entered a Diamond League 1500m this season. The event keeps producing fast races and rotating winners in her absence.

Birke Haylom won Shanghai in 3:55.56. Abbey Caldwell won Xiamen in 3:57.26. In Rabat, Laura Muir will make her 2026 debut. Muir won Olympic silver in Tokyo in a final Kipyegon controlled. She has won two European titles, world bronze in 2022, and holds a personal best of 3:53.37.

Freweyni Hailu (3:54.16), Agathe Guillemot (3:56.69), and Worknesh Mesele are also entered. The question is the same one the 1500m has been asking since May 16. Without Kipyegon, who leads? In Rabat, Muir puts her name forward.

Also Worth Watching

Ryan Crouser came third in the shot put in Xiamen, where Rajindra Campbell won with a national record of 22.34 meters. Joe Kovacs - whose 23.23m personal best is the second-farthest throw in history - is now in the field alongside Crouser, Campbell, Tom Walsh and Leonardo Fabbri.

Quincy Hall, who ran 43.40 to win the Paris Olympic 400m title in the fifth-fastest time in history, headlines the men's 400m alongside Matthew Hudson-Smith, who ran the European record (43.44) finishing second on the same night.

Jackson is back in the women's 200m with Shaunae Miller-Uibo. Cambrea Sturgis will also be getting in the blocks, but Richardson isn't in the field this time round.

The women's pole vault has Sandi Morris, Angelica Moser, Katie Moon Molly Caudery and Nina Kennedy.

Rabat is the third Diamond League of 2026, but it is the first in which almost everything is different from the week before.
