So far during the 2026 season, the Diamond League has ticked off Asia and Africa and is now headed to Europe. On June 4, this leg of the tour will open in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico with the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea - named after the Italian who held the 200m world record for seventeen years. The field assembled in his honour is not modest.

Julien Alfred and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden will go head-to-head in the 200m. Georgia Hunter-Bell's first Diamond League 1500m of the year is on deck. World indoor record holder over 800m, Keely Hodgkinson, will not be contesting two laps, but rather is dropping down to the 400m. The last two Olympic champions will also be present in the men's 100m.

Lyles, Jacobs, and the Men's 100m

Marcell Jacobs ran 9.80 in Tokyo to win the Olympic gold. He was 26 at the time, had transitioned from being a long jumper, and won gold in his first Olympic 100m final. He wasn't who was predicted to win, but he did just that and Italy made a very specific kind of noise.

Noah Lyles ran 9.79 in Paris and took the title - five-thousandths of a second over Kishane Thompson, the closest and fastest 100m final in Olympic history, and the first in which all eight finalists broke 10 seconds. Jacobs finished fifth in the race, with a time of 9.85 seconds.

Jacobs currently holds a season best of 10.01 which he ran in late May. Lyles, by contrast, ran 9.95 in Tokyo last month: a clean win from the reigning Olympic champion who is getting his legs under him before the rest of the season. Thursday in Rome, they will share a start line for the first time this year and while Jacobs has never won the Golden Gala he will surely have the home crowd behind him.

Alfred and Jefferson-Wooden Go Head-to-Head over 200m

Julien Alfred won the 2024 Olympic 100m title in 10.72 - Saint Lucia's first Olympic medal in any sport, at any Games. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the 2025 World 100m title in 10.61, a championship record, then stepped back on the track and ran 21.68 to win the 200m. She completed the sprint double as the first American woman to take both titles at a World Championships, and only the second woman in thirty years after Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013.

They have raced each other over 100m, but never over half a lap. That changes on Thursday.

Dina Asher-Smith, Amy Hunt, Anavia Battle and Favour Ofili are also in the field. The race is not shallow behind the top two, but the contest at the front has a presumed shape already.

Keely Hodgkinson Takes on The 400m

What can Keely Hodgkinson run over 400m?

Hodgkinson won the 2024 Olympic 800m and in February of this year, she broke the indoor world record with a time of 1:54.87. A few weeks after, at the World Indoor Championships in Poland, she won gold in a championship record of 1:55.30. Less than an hour later she ran the anchor leg of Team GB's 4x400m relay in 50.10 - the fastest split out of all athletes in the race. For context, her outdoor 400m personal best is 51.61 seconds.

The race in Rome should be fun and she will be back over two laps in Stockholm, three days later.

Georgia Hunter-Bell's First Diamond League 1500m of the Year

Georgia Hunter-Bell trains alongside Hodgkinson and they both became world champions during the indoor season. Hunter-Bell's winning time of 3:58.53 in the 1500m was a British indoor record and it was also her first global title.

In terms of the 1500m this year, Shanghai ran without Kipyegon. Xiamen ran without Kipyegon and Rabat ran without Kipyegon. The winners and field rotated in her absence and the question of who leads when she isn't there has been the event's running theme. Hunter-Bell is now in the picture.

The field includes Nikki Hiltz, Laura Muir, Birke Haylom and Abbey Caldwell - who  will also be looking for a win. The Golden Gala is also the meeting where Hicham El Guerrouj ran 3:26.00 in 1998 and set a world record in the men's race that has stood for 28 years and while the current women's record holder won't be present all there is left to do is just sit back and see what happens.

Battocletti and Sioli Compete at Home

At the 2024 European Championships, held in Rome, Nadia Battocletti won the 5000m and 10,000m. 

In both, just a few weeks later at the Paris Olympics she finished fourth in the 5000m and then ran 30:43.35 to place second in the 10,000m. Beatrice Chebet took the gold in that race in 30:43.25.

2025 brought more: silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5000m at the World Championships in Tokyo. Then in March this year, the World Indoor 3000m gold in Toruń. She has raced at the Golden Gala before and last year she set the Italian 5000m record - 14:23.15 - and before finishing third. Let's see if Thursday brings her first win at the meeting.

In the men's high jump, Matteo Sioli, is doing something similar. He is just twenty years old, and was fifth in Rome last year. Since then he cleared 2.30m in Bergen to win the European U23 title and reached the final in the World Championships in Tokyo. He will face a field that includes JuVaughn Harrison and Jan Štefela.

Also Worth Watching

Ryan Crouser is in the field along side Joe Kovacs who threw a world lead and meeting record of 22.58m in Rabat this past weekend. Leonardo Fabbri, Tom Walsh and Zane Weir will also be in the circle.

The women's 100m hurdles will not see Masai Russell this time, but the Olympic silver medalist from Paris, Cyréna Samba-Mayela, will make an appearance. Kendra Harrison and Danielle Williams will also be taking on the barriers.

Dalilah Muhammad, the 2019 world 400m hurdles champion, heads the start list for the event, alongside Anna Cockrell and Jasmine Jones. Emma Zapletalová is also racing, coming off a world lead and personal best of 52.82 in Rabat.

Winfred Yavi, the Paris 2024 Olympic steeplechase champion will also race in Rome.
