Keely Hodgkinson Headlines a Loaded Women's 800m Field

Few athletes have been as consistent in the 800m over the past several years as Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson.

Hodgkinson burst onto the global stage at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, earning silver in the women's 800m at just 19 years old. Since then, she has established herself as one of the premier middle-distance runners in the world, collecting Olympic, World Championship, and Diamond League success along the way.

Her crowning achievement came at the Paris Olympics in 2024, where she captured the Olympic title in the 800m. In addition to her Olympic success, Hodgkinson has amassed multiple World Championship medals and nine Diamond League victories, cementing her place among the sport's elite.

She has earned her awards, but her most recent achievement comes from the 2026 indoor track season. Taking down a 24-year-old record that was ironically set on her exact birthday, Keely is now the owner of a world record. 

On February 19th in Liéven, France, Hodgkinson set out to break the record standing time of 1:55.82. With all eyes on the record, Keely bested the field by four seconds, setting the world record in 1:54.87. 

The British star opened her 2026 outdoor season at the Rome Diamond League meeting, stepping down in distance to race the 400m. Despite facing a field of world-class specialists, she produced a personal-best 51.14, an encouraging sign after showcasing her speed during the indoor season.

Now, Hodgkinson returns to her signature event in Stockholm for her first outdoor 800m of the year.

Werro, Willis, and Hurta-Klecker Ready to Challenge

While Hodgkinson enters as the favorite, she will face a talented field capable of setting a fast pace.

Swiss standout Audrey Werro arrives in strong form after a breakthrough performance at the Rabat Diamond League, where she ran 1:56.56 to set a meeting record. The World Indoor Championships silver medalist has emerged as one of the event's rising stars and could be a major factor in Stockholm.

Sage Hurta-Klecker and Roisin Willis will represent the United States.

Willis continues to build momentum after turning professional and earning her first national 800m title. One of the brightest young talents in American middle-distance running, she has already proven capable of competing with the world's best.

Hurta-Klecker brings valuable championship experience to the field. She opened her outdoor campaign in Rabat with a season-best 1:58.18 and has consistently been a presence in international finals.

Also lining up is fellow Briton Jemma Reekie, another proven championship performer. Reekie has already been active during the outdoor season, racing both the 800m and 1500m. Most recently, she clocked 4:05.39 in the 1500m at the Rome Diamond League.

What to Watch For

Hodgkinson enters Stockholm as the athlete to beat, but her first outdoor 800m of the season presents an intriguing test. Early-season races often serve as indicators of form rather than championship-level performances, and several competitors arrive with valuable racing experience already under their belts.

Werro's recent victory in Rabat suggests she could pose the strongest challenge if the race develops into a fast, tactical contest. Hurta-Klecker and Reekie also possess the credentials and personal bests to remain in contention deep into the final 200 meters.

Even without championship medals on the line, Stockholm offers an opportunity to gauge where many of the world's top 800m runners stand as the outdoor season begins to intensify. For Hodgkinson, it will provide an early indication of her fitness and ambitions for the months ahead. For the rest of the field, it is another chance to test themselves against one of the sport's biggest stars.

It might be too early for another world record race for Hodgkinson, but her PR of 1:54.61 stands only about a second off the 43-year-old record of 1:53.28. Regardless of the record, it will be fast and intense, and cannot-miss race.
