Fifteen hundred miles separate Rome from Stockholm. The Golden Gala ran on June 4, Bauhaus-galan goes tomorrow. The European season does not take a breath.

Mondo Duplantis will vault in the city where he set the outdoor world record last summer. Keely Hodgkinson returns to the 800m three days after going one lap in Rome, in a personal best of 51.14 seconds. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden steps into the 100m for the first time this season after clocking 22.17 over 200m a few days ago. Cooper Lutkenhaus, the 17-year-old who became the youngest world indoor champion in the history of the sport a few months ago, makes his Diamond League Debut.

Here is what to watch.

Duplantis Makes His Return to Stockholm

The Stockholm Olympic Stadium hosted the 1912 Summer Olympics. In the century that has followed, 83 world records have been set on its glorious grounds, but not one of them was in the pole vault. That is until Mondo Duplantis came to play.

Last summer, Duplantis cleared 6.28m there for his 12th world record. His name was added to the stadium's Walk of Fame that same evening. Since that vault, Duplantis has taken the mark to 6.31m, set at his home club in Uppsala. He has not been beaten in a pole vault competition in nearly three years and has 39 Diamond League wins in his career - more than any athlete in the circuit's history.

The arithmetic of Sunday is the same as it was twelve months ago: how high can the bar go? Sam Kendricks, Kurtis Marschall, Sondre Guttormsen, Renaud Lavillenie - the man whose world record Duplantis broke in 2020 - and Menno Vloon are entered. They are all exceptional vaulters and will add to the theatrics.

Jefferson-Wooden's First 100m of the Season

In Rome on Thursday, Julien Alfred won the head-to-head between herself and Jefferson-Wooden in the women's 200m. Now the American, who won the sprint double at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, with a 10.61 in the 100m, a championship record and a 21.68 in the 200m, takes herself to the start line again.

Sunday in Stockholm will be her first 100m of 2026 and only third race of the year. Dina Asher-Smith is in the field, alongside Zaynab Dosso - the world indoor 60m champion - and Sade McCreath, who for a point in time last season was the joint Canadian national record holder in the event with Audrey Leduc, at 10.95 seconds. 

Keely Hodgkinson is Back on the Start Line of the 800m

European summer is in full swing for Hodgkinson, but hers just involves laps upon laps. On Thursday in Rome, she dropped down to the one lap race to run a personal best of 51.14 seconds to place seventh in a strong field of quarter mile specialists. Now she goes back to two laps.

She holds the world indoor 800m record at 1:54.87, won the Paris 2024 Olympic gold, and took the World Indoor title in February of this year in a championship record of 1:55.30. The 400m at the Golden Gala was a detour, and on Sunday, she is back on course.

The field is not arranged as a formality. Audrey Werro holds the 2026 world lead at 1:56.56 and won the Diamond League title last season. Prudence Sekgodiso won the World Indoor 800m in 2025. Sage Hurta-Klecker, Anaïs Bourgoin, Raevyn Rogers and Roisin Willis are also entered.

The question of the 800m world record has been put out there. Will it happen this season? Stockholm is where that question gets its first answer.

El Bakkali, Beamish & Girma Take on the Steeple Barriers in Sweden

Soufiane El Bakkali won the Olympic steeplechase gold in Tokyo and in Paris. He won the World Championships in 2022 and 2023. Geordie Beamish beat him by 0.07 seconds at the 2025 edition. Lamecha Girma holds the world record at 7:52.11.

All three are in Stockholm on Sunday.

El Bakkali carries the 2026 world lead with a time of 7:57.25. His stated target for the season is Girma's record. Kenneth Rooks - the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalist - Serem, Koech and Kibiwot, are also in the field. Between the four of them, they have a collection of world and Olympic bronze medals.

Cooper Lutkenhaus Makes His Diamond League Debut

Cooper Lutkenhaus is still in high school. Let that sink in.

In March, he won the men's 800m at the World Indoor Championships in 1:44.44 and became the youngest individual world champion in the history of athletics. The year before, he ran 1:42.27 at 16, breaking the U18 world record by more than a second.

On Sunday, he races the men's 800m at the Bauhaus-Galan. Marco Arop, the 2023 world outdoor champion, is in the same race, alongside Mohamed Attaoui and Bryce Hoppel.

He is already a world champion, and the rest of his career is still ahead of him.

Strong Names Headline the Shot Put

Chase Jackson won the women's shot put gold in 20.14m at the 2026 indoor World Championships. It was her first global indoor title and the one she had been chasing. She had taken bronze at the 2024 and 2025 World Indoor Championships, both times behind Sarah Mitton, who had won consecutive world indoor titles in Glasgow and Nanjing. In Toruń, Jackson finally cleared the gap.

Both of them are in Stockholm on Sunday. So is Jessica Schilder, who holds the 2023 outdoor world title and the Diamond League record at 21.09m. Yemisi Mabry, who won the Paris 2024 Olympic gold on her final throw of 20.00m will also be in the circle.

Between these four, we are sure to see something special. The meeting record stands at 20.57m, set by Valerie Adams.

Also Worth Watching

Valarie Sion leads the women's discus alongside Laulauga Tausaga, Jorinde van Klinken, Feng Bin and Silinda Morales. The men's discus has Roje Stona, Daniel Stahl, Sam Mattis and Kristjan Čeh.

Kenny Bednarek ran 19.69 in Rabat last weekend and is in the men's 200m with Sinesipho Dambile, Reynier Mena and Courtney Lindsey.

Alison Dos Santos returns for another 400m hurdles race and is the only athlete in the field who has dipped under 47 seconds.

The men's 1500m brings Yared Nuguse and Azeddine Habz, whose 3:27.49 is the sixth fastest in history. 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot and Cameron Myers are also lining up.

Malaika Mihambo, twice world champion, heads the women's long jump, with the likes of Larissa Iapichino, Agate de Sousa, Claire Bryant, Alexis Brown and Monae' Nichols.

The Stockholm Bauhaus-Galan is the fifth Diamond League of 2026, and the bar goes up on Sunday.
