For once, the hometown crowd did not get the result it expected.

Armand Duplantis entered the Stockholm Diamond League carrying the world lead at 6.31 meters and looking for another victory in front of Swedish fans. Instead, Australia’s Kurtis Marschall produced the performance of the day, clearing 5.90 meters to claim the win and hand the world record holder a rare defeat.

Marschall was flawless through the early stages of the competition and ultimately secured victory on countback after both he and Duplantis finished with best clearances of 5.90. Duplantis cleared 5.80 meters but could not find a clearance at 6.00, while Marschall also missed at 6.00 after locking up the biggest win of his Diamond League season.

The result ended what had been another dominant stretch for Duplantis, who came into Stockholm as the clear favorite after already raising the world lead to 6.31 meters earlier in the year. While the Swede remained among a cluster of athletes clearing 5.80, the margin for error disappeared as the bar continued to rise.

France’s Baptiste Thiery, the Netherlands’ Menno Vloon and American Zachery Bradford all cleared 5.80 to share third through fifth places behind Marschall and Duplantis. Former world record holder Renaud Lavillenie continued his resurgence with a season-best 5.70, while Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen also cleared 5.70.

Though Duplantis did not add another victory to his résumé, the Stockholm crowd still witnessed one of the deepest pole vault competitions of the season. Marschall’s 5.90 clearance stands as one of the most significant wins of his career and serves as a reminder that even the greatest vaulter in history can be challenged on the Diamond League circuit.
