Audrey Werro delivered one of the greatest performances in women's middle-distance history Sunday at the Stockholm Diamond League, running 1:53.98 to defeat Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson and become the third-fastest woman ever over 800 meters.

The 21-year-old Swiss star shattered her previous personal best of 1:55.91 by nearly two seconds and joined one of the most exclusive clubs in track and field history. Only world record holder Jarmila Kratochvílová (1:53.28) and Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo (1:53.82) have ever run faster. Werro's performance also lowered the Diamond League record, meet record, national record and world lead in a stunning breakthrough performance.

Hodgkinson was outstanding herself, finishing second in 1:54.33. The British star lowered her own world-leading mark from earlier in the season and became one of the fastest women in history, but even that was not enough to match Werro on a historic afternoon in Sweden. The race quickly separated into a battle between the two stars before Werro powered away over the final straight.

Behind them, American Roisin Willis continued her rise with a personal-best 1:57.56 to finish third, while Anaïs Bourgoin and Prudence Sekgodiso also broke 1:58. Yet the day belonged to Werro, whose performance instantly transformed her from Diamond League contender into one of the fastest 800-meter runners the sport has ever seen.
