JaMeesia Ford Injured, Leaves NCAA 200m Prelims In Wheelchair

Defending NCAA 200m champion JaMeesia Ford pulled up with an apparent leg injury, did not finish her preliminary heat and left the track in a wheelchair.

The NCAA women's 200-meter prelims took a dramatic turn Thursday night when defending champion JaMeesia Ford of South Carolina pulled up during Heat 1 at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and was unable to finish.

Ford, one of the favorites to contend for another NCAA title, appeared to suffer a lower-body injury midway through the race.

The South Carolina star junior sprinter slowed abruptly before stopping and crumbling to the ground, recording a DNF and ending her championship hopes. Following the race, Ford left the track in a wheelchair and was visibly emotional, leaving Hayward Field in tears.

The extent of the injury was not immediately known, though it appeared to involve her leg and could be a hamstring issue. It was later reported that she was having her left leg examined on site.

Ford's exit opens the door in one of the most anticipated sprint events of the NCAA Championships, while also delivering one of the most heartbreaking moments of the meet.

The defending champion entered Eugene as one of the sport's biggest stars, but her title defense came to an abrupt end before reaching the final.
