Jakob Ingebrigtsen Clocks Third-Best Mile EVER At Prefontaine2:51

Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s long-awaited return to the Diamond League is finally here in 2026. The track-and-field superstar will return at Silesia Diamond League 2026 in the men’s 1500m for his first Diamond League race since 2024.

Despite a long and decorated list of Ingebrigtsen’s achievements at just 25 years old, injuries have slowed down the young star considerably in recent years.

Repeated injuries to his Achilles tendon have sidelined Ingebrigtsen in major races in addition to the Diamond League circuit. He missed the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships and had been sidelined with surgery until the 2026 European Championships.

Here’s a full timeline of Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s injury history ahead of his return to running at Diamond League Silesia on Sunday, August 23.

2024: Achilles Injury Sidelines Jakob Ingebrigtsen To Start The Year.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen entered 2024 with a nagging Achilles injury, causing him to miss the World Indoor Championships in January 2024. He opted to stay in Norway and focus on alternative training and recovery instead of competing.

He remained on the sideline before returning for the Prefontaine Classic in May 2024, where he would compete against rival Josh Kerr. He picked up his lost momentum for the rest of the year and finished with multiple standout performances, including winning the 1500m in Lausanne.

2025: A Season Marked By Missed Opportunities

On paper, 2025 looks like the most frustrating of Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s career. What should have been a dominant campaign, turned into months of nagging injuries and “what-ifs?”

He started off 2025 on a hot streak, setting a world indoor mile record and competing at the World Indoor Championships. However, his Achilles would again flair up in May, leading to more missed time and frustration.

Ingebrigtsen missed the entire 2025 Diamond League Season, and arrived at the 2025 World Championships unprepared. He failed to make the final in the 1500m and finished in 10th place in the 5000m.

His injury followed him through the end of 2025.

2026: Opting For Surgery And Making His Way Back

In early February 2026, Jakob Ingebrigtsen announced that he would undergo surgery on his Achilles tendon, repairing an issue that had plagued the superstar for multiple years.

He returned for the first time following his surgery on August 10 at the European Athletics Championships. He finished first in the 5000m despite not racing for 11 months.

Now, Ingebrigtsen will return in the 1500m for the first time since 2025 and his first Diamond League event since 2024. He’ll compete against a stacked field, including 2024 Olympic Champion Cole Hocker.
