Jakob Ingebrigtsen is competing in the men's 1500m at Silesia Diamond League 2026, announcing his return to the Wanda Diamond League circuit after last competing in 2024.

This comes just one week after one Ingebrigtsen announced his return on the world stage, winning Gold in the 5000m last week at the European Athletic Championships.

Josh Kerr and Ingebrigtsen have a long-standing rivalry, with the two competing head-to-head many times in the past. Kerr made track and field history when he set the world record for the mile at Diamond League London, but won't be returning in Silesia to race against his Swiss rival.

So when could the two runners meet again? Here's every scenario for when we could see Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr race against each other.

What's The Most Likely Scenario?

Josh Kerr is not currently entered in the 1500m at the Silesia Diamond League and is not expected to compete. The next most-likely opportunity would be at the Zurich Diamond League meeting on August 27.

Ingebrigtsen, Cole Hocker, Yared Nuguse and Isaac Nader are already confirmed for that bout, and it could very well be fast enough to be a World Record Attempt.

IF Josh Kerr wants a slice of that pie, he could enter Zurich - and would not need any qualifying standards or metrics to compete.

The Wanda Diamond League Final Scenario

This scenario requires a few things to go right.

For Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr to meet at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, they would both need to find their way into the meet via standings or an at-large bid.

To qualify via standings, they would need to be in the top ten of the Diamond League Standings after Zurich. With only two meets remaining - they would have just Silesia and Zurich as opportunities to score points.

As things currently stand, Kerr is currently on the inside of the points bubble, with his eight points from London positioning him in sixth. But only one point separates him from tenth (Isaac Nader and his seven points). It is nearly impossible for Kerr to make it in on points if he doesn't race again, especially with so many Diamond League regulars slated to race in Silesia.

Ingebrigtsen would need to place well in both Silesia and Zurich to lock in his Brussels seat. A task that he should be up for. Two top three finishes would likely get him in.

In the case, that one makes it and the other doesn't - one would have to rely on a Wanda Diamond League Wild Card.

You might remember that last year Noah Lyles was granted a Wild Card en-route to his League Winning run in the 200m last year.

Global Wild Cards to the Wanda Diamond League final allow organizers to invite up to four athletes to compete at the Diamond League Final, so long as they meet one of the following criteria in that chosen discipline:

  • World Record Holder (Kerr would qualify)
  • Reigning World, Olympic or Diamond League Champion
  • Top 5 In WA Rankings of their event
  • Top 20 in the overall World Athletics Rankings

A Final Scenario (Very Difficult)

It is most unlikely that the two will see each-other at the World Ultimate Championships in September.

Ingebrigtsen and Kerr are both unlikely to qualify via the World Ranking Quota. Kerr is currently 83rd in World Rankings and Ingebrigtsen is currently unranked (seeing as though he has not yet raced a 1500m).

Ingrebrigtsen is automatically qualified via his 5,000m Olympic Title so he can run the 5K.

Either could in theory qualify by winning the 2026 Diamond League Final, but they obviously can't both win the 1500m at the Diamond League Final.

Unless Kerr were to jump up in distance and somehow qualify and then win the Diamond League Final in the 5K - the two won't race in Budapest.
