World record holder Sabastian Sawe has withdrawn from the 2026 BMW Berlin Marathon because of an injury, race organizers announced Thursday, ending anticipation that the Kenyan star could produce a standout performance at one of the world's premier marathon events.

In a statement released by organizers, Sawe said he was “forced to withdraw” from the Sept. 27 race and expressed disappointment at being unable to compete.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you I am forced to withdraw from the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON due to an injury,” Sawe said.

Sawe added that he had been looking forward to “achieving something special” on the streets of Berlin and crossing the finish line at the iconic Brandenburg Gate. He also thanked race organizers for their support, saying he had hoped to give something back to the event and those who helped him throughout his career.

The withdrawal removes one of the race’s most prominent entrants and leaves uncertainty about when Sawe will return to competition. Organizers did not provide details about the nature or severity of the injury.

The Berlin Marathon is regarded as one of the fastest marathon courses in the world and has been the site of numerous record-breaking performances.
