Some seasons pass. Some rewrite what the sport looks like. 2026 has been the latter.

Two world records fell in Zürich last week. Masai Russell over the 100m hurdles. Alison dos Santos over the 400m hurdles. Josh Kerr broke the mile world record in London earlier this summer. Audrey Werro became the third-fastest 800m woman in history. Cierra Jackson set a Diamond League Record in the discus. Emmanouil Karalis cleared 6.20m to sit second all-time in the men's pole vault as he continues to chase Mondo Duplantis and his 6.31m world record. The list just keeps going on and on.

This weekend, the Wanda Diamond League season will conclude in Brussels, with Diamond Trophies on the table.

Fourteen meets across four continents. Five months of racing. And every one of those storylines lands at King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels - a stadium that has hosted the Memorial Van Damme meeting for decades and fills with nearly 40,000 spectators for some of the loudest nights in athletics - for the two-day Diamond League Final and fifteenth meeting of the year.

Here is just some of what to watch.

Two World Records Roll into Brussels: Russell and Dos Santos Chase More

One of the most historic stories of the 2026 Diamond League season set itself up in one meet. Masai Russell broke Tobi Amusan's 12.12 women's 100m hurdles world record in Zürich last Thursday - 12.09, four years after the mark was set and after Russell spent all summer chasing it. Russell and Amusan will line up in Brussels, as will European champion Nadine Visser (12.28 PB), world indoor 60m hurdles record holder Devynne Charlton (12.37 PB), Pia Skrzyszowska (12.37 PB) and Alaysha Johnson (12.31 PB).

Alison dos Santos broke Karsten Warholm's 45.94 men's 400m hurdles world record - a mark that took down a world record set at the Tokyo Olympics and one that also redefined what the event could be - just half an hour before Russell set hers. Dos Santos will close out his 2026 circuit against Abderrahman Samba (46.98 PB), Ezekiel Nathaniel (47.11 PB), Trevor Bassitt (47.37 PB) and Caleb Dean (47.23 PB).

Two records set. Two Diamond League Trophies still to be won.

Werro and Broeders-Bol Meet Again in the Women's 800m That Runs Like a Sprint

The women's 800m has changed shape in 2026 and Audrey Werro has been the driving force behind it. The 22-year-old Swiss star owns a 1:53.70 personal best - the third-fastest women's 800m in history - and has spent the last few months pushing the event towards times that had been unimaginable for well over a few decades.

Femke Broeders-Bol has followed her. In a dramatic shift away from the 400m hurdles, an event that has awarded her both world and Olympic medals, Broeders-Bol, in her first season over two laps, has already clocked a Dutch national record of 1:54.71. For a bit more context, she opened her year in 1:59.07 indoors, before rapidly dropping her times, building through the summer and winning a bronze medal at the European Championships.

The two will not be joined by Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, but Addison Wiley (1:56.83 PB), Oratile Nowe (1:56.76 PB), Saida Tsehaye (1:56.92 PB) will be among a strong field of women looking to challenge.

Werro has rewritten the pace. Broeders-Bol has chased her to it. Brussels is the next chapter in a story that is far from being finished.  

Ingebrigtsen and the American Division: Depth, Drama and a 1500m Built for Brussels

The men's 1500m is one of the deepest fields produced this season, and an American crew will meet Jakob Ingebrigtsen in just his third Diamond League meeting of the season.

Ingebrigtsen (3:26.73 PB, the fourth-fastest 1500m ever run) lines up chasing his first Diamond League Trophy since his return from Achilles surgery. Six Americans stand in his way: Yared Nuguse (3:27.80 PB, 2024 Olympic bronze), Cole Hocker (3:27.65 PB, Paris Olympic champion), Ethan Strand (3:30.25 PB, NCAA record holder over the short track mile and 3000m), Hobbs Kessler (3:29.45 PB, North American 1500m U20 record holder), Vincent Ciattei (3:30.90 PB, USA 1 mile road champion) and Christian Jackson (3:41.53 PB, multiple-time NCAA All-American).

Add the international depth - 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot, U20 world record holder Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech and current world number one Cameron Myers - and this start list brings more than a handful of men who have run inside 3:28 to one race.

One takes the Trophy, but every man in the field has an argument.

Valarie Sion Faces Cierra Jackson in a Discus Decider

Valarie Sion has been the untouchable name in women's discus for years. Cierra Jackson broke Sion's Diamond League record in London in July - one of the few marks in recent years to disrupt Sion's grip on the event. They will meet again in Brussels.

Sion, an eight-time consecutive USATF national champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, currently holds a season best of 73.10m, just shy of her 73.52m career best. Jackson, who is starting to close the gap, holds a personal best of 71.72m

The two will be joined by Shanice Craft (68.10m PB), Bin Feng (69.12m PB), Vanessa Kamga (66.61m PB) and Jorinde Van Klinken (70.99m PB).

Seville, Simbine, Coleman, Bromell and a Stacked Men's 100m Start List

Oblique Seville arrives in Brussels as the world number one with a 9.77-second career best and two Diamond League wins to his name this year - Monaco and Silesia. He also placed second in two - Prefontaine and London. The men's 100m in 2026 has run tight from start to finish, and no man on the circuit has walked off the track without company all season.

Kayinsola Ajayi (9.84 PB), Emmanuel Eseme (9.83 PB), Lachlan Kennedy (9.85 PB), Gift Leotlela (9.87 PB) and Akani Simbine (9.82 PB) all add to the headline. Trayvon Bromell, with a personal best of 9.76 and a season best of 9.91, and Christian Coleman with a personal best of 9.76 and season best of 9.90, add pedigree. Home Belgian sprinter Simon Verherstraeten completes the line up.

The fastest question mark of the Diamond League season gets answered soon.

Chase Jackson's American Record Meets Jessica Schilder's Dutch Record in the Shot Put

The women's shot put has quietly become one of the standout events of the year. Chase Jackson reset her own American record less than a week ago with a mark of 21.01m, joining Jessica Schilder as the only two women to have thrown over 21m since 2012. Schilder broke the Diamond League and Dutch national record earlier this year with a throw of 21.09m.

The women have gone head-to-head 44 times in their careers, with Jackson leading Schilder 31-13.

In the mix along the way has also been Sarah Mitton. She is the 2023 World silver medalist and two-time World indoor champion, with a career best 20.68m.

Joining them are Yemisi Mabry (20.00m PB), Fanny Roos (19.70m PB) and Danniel Thomas-Dodd (19.77m PB).

Mondo and Manolo and a Bar That Keeps Rising in the Men's Pole Vault

Mondo Duplantis chases a world record every time he steps on a runway. He cleared 6.31m at Uppsala in March, went 6.13m in Paris, 6.21m in Lausanne and most recently went 6.25m in Zürich.

Emmanouil Karalis makes it even more real. The Greek national record holder went 6.20m last week - a clearance that puts him second on the men's pole vault all-time list, behind Duplantis himself. He also had a number of attempts at 6.32m and has consistently looked to push the bar into the same range as the Swede. Add Sondre Guttormsen (6.00m PB), Kurtis Marschall (6.00m PB) and Sam Kendricks (6.06m PB) and the field carries a handful of the world's best.

The bar will go above 6.00m on Friday, let's see who's on the other side of it.

Also Worth Watching

The rest of the two-day program runs just as deep, with more storylines than one preview can hold. Every event has a headline. Here are just a few other events to keep an eye on.

In the field, 2026 European high jump champion, Gianmarco Tamberi features. On the women's side, Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Nicola Olyslagers will meet again, and this time are joined by three-time Olympic heptathlon champion Nafi Thiam, who holds a personal best of 2.02m.

The men's javelin brings together Rumesh Pathirage, Anderson Peters and Julius Yego, with Ziyi Yan headlining the women's event. Her personal best of 71.74m, set earlier this year, gaps the field by over 4 meters.

Marileidy Paulino leads the women's 400m. She has been unbeaten all season. Collen Kebinatshipi also holds a clean card on the circuit and will be challenged by the likes of Matthew Hudson-Smith, Zakithi Nene and Jacory Patterson.

Cordell Tinch, Ja'Kobe Tharp, Trey Cunningham and Jamal Britt are in the mix in the 110m hurdles. Georgia Hunter Bell, Nikki Hiltz, Dorcus Ewoi and Jessica Hull anchor a stacked 1500m field, while Julien Alfred, Amy Hunt, Anavia Battle, Cambrea Sturgis and Kayla White will meet over 200m.

Records fell. Rivalries were reinforced. This is a season the sport won't forget.
