This week - we’ll watch the World Diamond League Final in Brussels, and greater stakes are looming, with qualification to the World Ultimate Championships brewing.
Originally, World Athletics had listed that 2026 Diamond League Event Winners would earn qualification to the World Ultimate Championships, but apparently that criteria has changed. Now, the highest finishing individuals in the Diamond League Final, that are not already qualified for the World Ultimate Championships, will receive an invitation.

For athletes on the outside looking in, the Diamond League Final provides one final avenue for qualification. Place high enough in your Diamond League Final and you’re in.
A sense of desperation has entered the frey. So who needs to beat who? Let’s take a look at some of the highlights:
Jake Heyward VS Phanuel Koech VS Vincent Ciattei - Men’s 1500m
Vincent Ciattei currently holds the final World Ranking Quota spot, but he’ll still have to defend his position from Jake Heyward and Phanuel Koech.
Jake Heyward has been a pleasant surprise for me in 2026. Heyward stepped away from track for nearly four years after a double achilles surgery - but has made a return in a big way in 2026.
Second at the UK Championships, third at the London Diamond League Meeting, fourth at the Commonwealth Games, fourth at the European Championships, and sixth in Silesia - Heyward has shown that he is capable of competing at a World Class level.
In my opinion, Phanuel Koech is better positioned to snag the spot. He has had a quiet but strong season, collecting runner-up finishes at both Silesia and Zurich last week.
Ciattei has the talent to defend this spot. After all, he is the US Champion over 5,000m and the US Runner-up over 1500m.
On the Diamond League circuit this year, he finished fourth in Rabat, fourth in Stockholm, eighth in Eugene, seventh in Silesia and seventh in Zurich.
Linden Hall, Hirut Meshesha, Georgia Griffith and Marta Alemayo - Women’s 5K
Linden Hall being on the outside looking in is kind of a shocker - but maybe it shouldn’t be when six of the twelve qualified 5K women are from Ethiopia.
Linden Hall finished 11th in the 5K At the World Outdoor Championships in 2025, but she’ll need a hail mary win to get in this time around.
Georgia Griffith (AUS) may have a better shot of racing her way to the World Ultimate Championships. She owns a 14:32 5K PR, but Hirut Meshesha (ETH) has the best odds with her 14:22 5K PR.
Marta Alemayo is also in the mix, and in a similar category to Georgia Griffith. She too owns a personal best of 14:32 and currently sits 18th in World Ranking.
The Wanda Diamond League Final is chock full of talent in the 5,000m with three women who have run 14:20 or faster: Freweyni Hailu, Medina Eisa, and Likina Amebaw - all hailing from Ethiopia.
Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu VS Reynold Cheruiyot VS Cornelius Kemboi - Men’s 5K
Cornelius Kemboi currently holds the final spot in World Ranking Quota and will need to defend his position from Dominic Lobalu and Reynold Cheruiyot.
Fourth at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Dom Lobalu needs to replicate the success that he enjoyed in Monaco earlier this year.
At this year’s Monaco Diamond League Meeting in July - Lobalu outkicked Graham Blanks, Birhanu Balew and Jacob Krop to win that 5K in 12:52.54.
Reynold Cheruiyot has not raced any 5K’s this season so he is a bit of a question mark. He only owns a 13:16.4 personal best - so it is a bit perplexing seeing him listed in the Brussels field.
They’ll have to take down Cornelius Kemboi who finished fifth two weeks ago in Lausanne. He has run under 13-minutes on four occasions this year.
Sigrid Borge - Women’s Javelin
Borge, a five-time Norwegian National Champion, will automatically advance regardless of how she performs in Brussels, and will take the spot of Tori Moorby (NZL)
Borge has never won a Wanda Diamond League Meeting, but she has come close this year. She finished second in Xiamen, and second in Oslo this year. She finished fourth at this year’s European Athletics Championships and finished the “regular” Diamond League Season fourth in the standings.
She will need to take down China’s Ziyi Yan, who beat her in Oslo, while also collecting wins at the Xiamen, Monaco and Paris Diamond League meetings.

- Men’s 200m: Reynier Mena (CUB) vs Timothe Mumenthaler (SUI)
- Men’s 800m: Tobias Gronstad (NOR) vs Yanis Meziane (FRA) for Donavan Brazier’s (USA) spot
- Women’s 800m: Saida Tsehaye (ETH) vs Veronica Vancardo (SUI)
- Women’s 1500m: Tsige Duguma (ETH) Would Take Haregeweyni Kalayu’s (ETH) spot
- Women’s High Jump: Lamara Distin (JAM) will take Marija Vukovic’s (MNE) spot.
- Women’s PV: Emily Grove (USA) will take Eliza McCartney’s (NZL) spot.
- Men’s Javelin: David Wegner (POL) will take Sachin Yadav’s (IND) spot.
