Ingebrigtsen and Hocker will resume their rivalry by facing off in Men's 1500m and Men's 5000m at Budapest Ultimate Championships

Ingebrigtsen, Hocker Rivalry To Reignite at World Athletics Ultimate Championships

Following more fireworks in Brussels, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Cole Hocker are set to clash once more at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in both the men’s 1500m and 5000m.

Ingebrigtsen edged out Hocker at the Wanda Diamond League Final on Friday, finishing fourth with a 3:30.52. Hocker slotted into seventh place with a 3:30.80, both ultimately falling to 20-year-old Australian sensation Cam Myers.

Gasoline was thrown onto the fiery rivalry after Brussels courtesy of Ingebrigtsen’s post-race comments, where he called his competition “cowards” and “losers” after claiming that Hocker hid behind the pack instead of racing properly. Hocker then fired his own shot on social media, posting a story to Instagram saying “No excuses from me.”

On Saturday, Ingebrigtsen released a statement apologizing for his language after the meet.

“I shouldn’t have called anyone losers. I apologise for that. It was beneath me, regardless of the adrenaline and emotions,” Ingebrigtsen said. “But I stand by what I said about Cole and his team acting cowardly.”

Hocker, Ingebrigtsen’s Recent Results

Now, the duumvirate heads to Budapest, where they square off in the 1500m and 5000m. The last time Ingebrigtsen ran the 5000m, he finished first in the European Athletics Championships, notching a 13:15.29 in Birmingham on August 10.

Although he’s ranked as the No. 5 5000m runner in the world compared to Ingebrigtsen’s 40th, as he comes back from injury, Hocker’s personal best of 12:57.82 doesn’t come close to the Norwegian’s best of 12:48.45 set in 2021.

The two have shared honors in recent years, with Ingebrigtsen claiming gold at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. After both athletes failed to advance to the 1500m final in 2025, Hocker conquered the 5000m to win the 2025 World Athletics Championship.

The 1500m field in Budapest will also feature Myers, who is hot off the heels of a 3:30.14 in Brussels. Josh Kerr will also participate after setting the mile world record at the 2026 London Diamond League. Following Ingebrigtsen’s comments on the state of that race, all eyes will be on the high-profile athletes of one of the deepest fields in the world.

The two events will give Ingebrigsten a chance to knock off the reigning Olympic champion, and it’ll give Hocker a chance to prevent his rival from reaching his prior peak.
