When Cole Hocker surged to the front of the pack at the 2024 Paris Olympics to win the men's 1500m final, it wasn't just significant that he beat Josh Kerr and Yared Nuguse. It was, in fact, the first time in his career that he'd ever defeated Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

Based on the best publicly available data we could find, Hocker and Ingebrigtsen have raced each other 12 times. Before Paris, that number was six times, with two races, the 1500m semifinal and final, taking place at the Olympics. Heading into that final, Ingebrigtsen had either won every race where both he and Hocker were competitors, or finished better than the former Texas A&M runner each time.

Interestingly enough, their first race was at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where Ingebrigtsen won and Hocker finished sixth.

All of this is to say, when Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Cole Hocker race in the 2026 Diamond League Silesia 1500m event on August 23, there's a lot of history behind it. That's on top of the fact that it will be Ingebrigtsen's first 1500m race since returning from an Achilles injury that kept him out of competition for nearly 11 months.

So, who owns the rivalry between Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Cole Hocker? Ingebrigtsen, wholeheartedly. In 12 matchups, the Norwegian runner has finished ahead of Hocker 10 times, winning six outright. Hocker won the Paris 1500m final and the 2025 World Championships 5000m final.
