World Road Running Championships Storylines To Watch

Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Agnes Ngetich both headline the World Road Running Championships in Copehagen, as elite names meet in six three races

Agnes Ngetich Wins ANOTHER World Title At 2026 World XC Championships3:17

Whenever Jakob Ingebrigtsen decides to run – or speak – the world watches. This week, the world will be watching Copenhagen, as Ingebrigtsen and hundreds of other elite runners are slated to compete at the 2026 World Road Running Championships.

The two-day event will crown six world champions out of a pool of 496 athletes (including Ingebrigtsen, Agnes Ngetich and Yared Nuguse), but 65,000 amateur or recreational runners will run the same courses this weekend. Saturday, September 19, begins with the One Mile and the 5K, while Sunday, September 20, hosts the Half marathon.

Ingebrigtsen, Gressier Square Off In 5K

The Men’s 5K pits two world champions against each other on the road for the first time. Frenchman Jimmy Gressier took the 10,000m World Championship in 2025 with a 28:55.77, while Ingebrigtsen has two 5000m World Championships to his name as well as the Olympic Gold in 2024.

Gressier’s 12:51 5K mark in April’s Lille race set the European record, slotting him in at third all-time. However, the two’s last clash at the European Championships resulted in Ingebrigtsen winning his fourth consecutive title with a 13:15.29, pushing Gressier off the podium to fourth place.

Agnes Ngetich Goes For Second World Championship

Two-time world record holder Agnes Ngetich is aiming to secure a second World Title in the 2026 season. The 25-year-old Kenyan opened her campaign this year with a win at the 46th World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, an improvement on her this-place finish in 2023.

Ngetich also clocked the third-fastest 10,000m ever in Lille earlier this year, before securing a world lead in the 3000m. Ngetich’s most fierce competition will be in the form of Tsigie Gebreselama, the World No. 10 in road running. The Ethiopian has a personal best of 1:04:21 in the half marathon and won a Diamond League Meeting in the 5000m in 2024.

Nicholas Kipkorir and Daniel Ebenyo Clash Again

After the two duked it out at the last edition of the World Road Running Championships in Riga in 2023 and each made the podium, Nicholas Kipkorir and Daniel Ebenyo are positioned against each other once more in the half marathon.

Kipkorir put in a personal best of 58:08 in March’s Lisbon race, which earned him a top-10 all-time time and the World No. 2 road runner title. Ebenyo is the wily vet, who, at 31, is looking to improve on the silver medal he won in Riga.
