5. Leah Starkey Runs Third-Fastest Holmdel Time Ever
When Leah Starkey runs at a meet, it’s pretty normal that she leaves as the headliner. Her weekend at The 51st Shore Coaches Invitational, presented by Diadora, was no different, where the Ocean Township, New Jersey native made yet another statement.
Starkey clocked a 17:08.9, good for third-fastest in Holmdel history, on her way to winning the Girl’s Division D race. After the race, Starkey said she was not even pushing herself to her maximum, electing to wait until the bigger races later in the season.
Her time was just one second short of Angelina Perez’s 17:07 from the 2021 NJSIAA Group Championships.
The mark is just another accolade in Starkey’s illustrious high school career, which includes her win in the NJSIAA Meet of Champions as a sophomore in 2025 with a time of 17:15. The junior also finished seventh at the Brooks XC Championships in 2025, throwing down a 17:25.0.
4. Ellery Lincoln Wins Chile Pepper 5k, Breaks High School Course Record
At the El Caliente 5k, a part of the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Ellery Lincoln spent her race battling it out with Hattie Ray Beshears. By the two-mile mark, the pair had already made it a two-girl race.
Pulling over 16 seconds away from the rest of the pack, Ellery and Beshears were neck and neck until the final 400m. There, Ellery pulled ahead and finished in 16:13, just two seconds ahead of Beshears’ 16:15. The mark is a new personal best for Lincoln and broke Hattie Ray’s older sister’s time of 16:40 for the new meet record.
The race promises to be a sign of things to come for Lincoln, who spent August competing at the World Athletics U20 Championship 1500m to earn a fifth-place finish.
3. Hannah Gapes Destroys Personal Best At Joe Piane
As the alpha of the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country team national championship-winning NC State Wolfpack, Hannah Gapes reestablished herself as an undeniable force at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational 2026.
The fifth-year runner led her team to a win in the team field as it topped a 20-team pool, but her more impressive feat came with an individual title in the 5k. Gapes smoked her previous personal best in the event, clocking a 15:22.6, which was 12.8 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Gapes rolled into South Bend, Indiana, as the No. 5 on FloTrack’s 2026 College XC Rankings: Division I and as the top-ranked runner at Joe Piane. The New Zealander is poised to push for the top spot after finishing fifth in the NCAA Individual Championship in 2025.
2. Aidan Troutner Wins Nail-Biting Men’s USATF Road 10k Championship
While the women’s race was a tour de force showcase of talent, the men’s race at the USATF Road 10k Championship was a brawl from start to finish. Although six men all finished within five seconds of each other, it was Aidan Troutner who claimed the laurels.
Troutner and the pack reached the first 5k in 14:12, but as the mile pace dropped, the stage was set for a close finish when Troutner started to lead the group. The 27-year-old BYU graduate shaved nine seconds off Dirk Lakeman’s championship record set in 1986 with a 27:40.
He pulled away from Dillon Maggard in the final hundred meters, who finished just a second behind at 27:41. Ryan Ford, Reid Buchanan, Creed Thompson and Joel Reichow all finished before 27:46.
Troutner will return to the roads in November at the New York City Marathon, where he will be looking to improve on his personal best time of 2:10:23.
1. Emily Venters Sets Championship, Minnesota Soil Records
Emily Venters set the tone – and pace – of the women’s USATF Road 10k Championship, firing out to a 5:15 first mile and leading the rest of the runners by 16 seconds at 5K in 15:51. If that pace wasn’t impressive enough, she dipped below the five-minute threshold during the penultimate mile (4:56).
The former Utah All-American kept cruising to an easy victory by recording a 31:09, a whopping 48 seconds ahead of Kassie Parker’s second-place finish. Venters’ performance shattered Jess McClain’s 2024 championship record of 31:40 by 31 seconds and was only 13 seconds off the women’s-only record of 30:56.
The win is Venters’ third national road title in the last three months, winning a 6k in Canton, Ohio, and an 8k in Kingsport, Tennessee. The ex-Ute also came in second place at a 5k at Boulderthon less than a week before her St. Paul win.
